Last month, former President Jimmy Carter marked one year in hospice. After entering end-of-life care in February 2023, he celebrated his 99th birthday and grieved the death of his wife of 77 years and former first lady, Rosalynn Carter.
Even then, Carter was able — with help — to attend her funeral.
Even at the end of life, the nation’s longest-living president — someone who “practically no one ever thought” would be elected president, writes the New York Times’ Peter Baker — is defying the odds.
According to the National Institutes of Health, more than 90% of patients who enter hospice care die within the first six months. Roughly 36% of patients die within a week of entering hospice.
End-of-life advocates and experts cite Carter’s stay in hospice as having a positive impact on the discourse surrounding end-of-life care — a medical service that Northeastern University experts say many people put off until it’s too late.

Gerald Ford had the rinos of the era wrapped up against the upstart Regan.
Must’ve meant Nixon (Ford)
Amnesty for draft dodgers (his first act); rampaging inflation; high unemployment; the Iran disaster; huge spikes in gas prices; the establishment of the federal Department of Education; among many other messes left by this incompetent man. I have no sympathy for him, don’t believe he was or is a good man (read some of the Secret Service accounts as to what a phony he was in private) and sadly, religion can act as an effective cloak for many things.
Not confused, but yes, I guess you could have different categories of ‘worst’
Not morphine. Its Fentanyl.
Gave away the Panama Canal
I think it was the Billy Beer.
Carter ran against Ford who beat Regan in the Primaries. At least that’s how I thought it was.
Carter is responsible for the mess in Iran because he thought the Shah dissed him. The man was a coward and prideful.
His extreme hatred of Israel even alienated his self-loathing Jewish staffers.
Right. We’ve been checking into Hospice for our mother, but she would have to have documentation from her doctor stating that she has less than six months to live. She’s 99, but
The issue that started my MIL in Hospice was that every couple of weeks she was being transported to the hospital from her nursing home. The came a point where she had had enough, was ready to die, and said so. The doctor have her little hope. Enter Hospice.
She signed papers stating no more trips to the ER, and to opt out of some of her daily prescriptions. She improved! A Hospice nurse came 2x/week to check her vitals, etc.
That was back in 2013, and she died in 2015. I didn’t know what the laws were then.
He did not give it away. He sold it. For $1.00
But seriously, this transfer was in the works since 1964. And the Senate ratified the transfer. Carter could not and did not act unilaterally.
And besides - who cares? Compared with all the atrocities our modern presidents commit - this is a Nothing Burger. Iran-Contra was a bigger scandal.
... she’s 99, but doing pretty well.
Post presidency Carter walked the walk with his generous and very low key non profit work, for those efforts I applaud and admire him.
Absolutely! He’s also responsible for the Mental Health Systems Act that emptied mental hospitals because he wanted to “preserve their dignity”. Outrageous.
So he should have sent troops to Iran? Another Vietnam?
Iran returned the hostages immediately after Reagan took office. Can you understand that there are choices other than “another Vietnam” and leaving the hostages to rot?
Many people were and still are confused about hospice. They recoil at the thought that their loved ones should “go to a hospice to just die”.
Thankfully that ignorance is slowly fading away.
Yup. Forgot that.
Yes, they are so much better on the street and living in tents.
...oh... and Carter sent a military rescue mission. Remember the failed “Operation Eagle Claw?
Let’s simply admit Jimmy was just a sad, bitter, incompetent man who was in over his head.
Carter’s presidency does look quite good compared to Clinton and Obama. He doesn’t even come off that bad compared to the Bushes.
