Between groceries and restaurants, Americans are spending more of their income on food than they have in 30 years.
That's according to the latest data from the USDA, which shows that U.S. consumers spent more than 11% of their disposable income on eating — whether at home or at a restaurant — in 2022, the highest percentage since 1991.
"This is really a metric that's about the share of our disposable personal income which the USDA tracks, and which recently was at essentially a 31-year high," Jesse Newman, food reporter for the Wall Street Journal, told CBS News.

Beer prices in Austin are skyrocketing. Six packs which used to cost $8.99-9.99 six months ago are now selling for 11.99-12.99.
It’s all about the worldwide price of grain, all of which is priced to the international market without regard to the cost of production.
Wheat and barley cost the same in Rio as in Denver.
And taking Russian production off the market has punished every American.
Plus the high price of fuel
Fussy eaters. Organic, free range, locally grown, non-GMO, and gluten-free all cost more.
Thank you for the explanation. I generally stick to the Axis powers for my beer-Germany, Italy, and Japan. The prices are prohibitive. I guess I will switch to Yuengling. As an aside, I read that Russia is exporting grain by way of a ghost fleet which uses flags of convenience.

I as looking at the Kroger weekly add today and saw a loaf of whole grain bread for $8 on sale for $7. I was shocked, shocked I tell you.
I only go shopping once every three weeks now and no extras in my cart. Never get out of there without spending $150.
I remember when a 6/pack of Bud 16oz. Cost $1.60 and that was during the 70’s inflation.
I had a choice between the beer, and a taxi home with my groceries. 50% of our income paid the rent in the low rent district. The remaining 50% bought gŕoceries, baby formula and diapers. A dozen pampers was 89 cents.
There was nothing left from paycheck to paycheck. We walked to work. When he worked overtime, we might splurge $1.30 on a medium pizza and a grinder for $1.60
Foodstamps didn’t exist then. Times were tough.

It’s a lot cheaper by the two-pack at Costco. Still expensive, but a lot better than Kroger.
At Walmart today, a can of condensed mushroom soup was $1.75. It was over $2.50 for a small can of green chilis. Hamburger was over $5/pound.
Biden thinks this is great. Why not? The illegals get free food debit cards....
