New York Jury Finds NRA Head Wayne Pierre Liable, Must Pay $4.3 Million in Damages

A New York jury found National Rifle Association (NRA) boss Wayne LaPierre liable in a civil case on Friday, ordering him to pay $4.3 million in damages for the mismanagement and misuse of charitable funds.

The verdict concludes a trial in the civil lawsuit brought by the Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York, accusing Mr. LaPierre of questionable financial practices during his tenure from 2014 to 2022.

The jury found that Mr. LaPierre violated his fiduciary duties, causing $5.4 million in damages to the NRA.

Notably, they recognized that he had repaid just over $1 million to the charity, which reduced the net damages.

In addition to the financial penalty, the jury determined that Mr. LaPierre should be removed from his position as executive vice president of the gun rights group.

The Manhattan jury found that Mr. LaPierre had misused millions of dollars from the organization’s funds to make personal luxury purchases over a span of 30 years.

The jury did not find Mr. LaPierre liable for breaking laws against self-dealing regarding a post-employment contract with the NRA, valued at over $17 million. They found that the arrangement had been properly approved in advance by the NRA board.

Despite Mr. LaPierre’s recent resignation, the judge will now decide whether to permanently bar him from any future leadership roles within the NRA in an upcoming bench trial.

Jury deliberations in the case began on Feb. 16.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) addressed New York business owners in a new interview and told them there was “nothing to worry about” after former President Trump was hit with a $355 million fine and the inability to conduct business in New York for three years.

Hochul joined John Catsimatidis on “The Cats Roundtable” on WABC 770 AM where she was asked if other New York businesspeople should be worried that if “they can do that to the former president, they can do that to anybody.”

“I think that this is really an extraordinary unusual circumstance that the law-abiding and rule-following New Yorkers who are business people have nothing to worry about because they’re very different than Donald Trump and his behavior,” Hochul responded.

Nothing to worry about if you’re not President Trump, or Wayne LaPierre, or any other of the political enemies of the Democrat New Jerk state politicians...

Moral of the stories: don’t do business in New York. Don’t even visit, if you can even find a hotel room that isn’t occupied.

In the story:
"civil lawsuit brought by the Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York, accusing Mr. LaPierre of questionable financial practices during his tenure from 2014 to 2022"

So Letitia James brought the civil suit on behalf of:

One of those three possibilities, being her standing to pursue a remedy?

California has a ‘Private Attorney General’ law that allows citizens and groups to sue on behalf of the state. It has been used a fair bit, though mostly relatively small, to sue places like gas stations and restaurants for not having perfectly aligned handicapped accessible bathrooms and the like. If the mirror in an accessible bathroom is not properly aligned for wheelchairs, they can sue. And there have been thousands of such suits on many grounds. Not just bathroom mirrors. It’s basically a shakedown. They could just ask the mirror be reset but they don’t - they ask for $10,000+ AND compliance. It’s easier to settle than pay to defend. They share a cut of settlements with the state but the bulk goes to the plaintiffs, who are often organizations representing a plaintiff whose raison d’etre is to sue people and entities that violate some arcane and minuscule law. The organization gets the lion’s share.

New York has started to enact similar laws, in a more limited fashion. But it may be just a matter of time until they go the whole way. And when they do, Hochul’s assurances won’t mean squat.

You could rent a biker gang for the weekend for $10,000.

I'm just sayin'.

As a life long member of the NRA, I really don’t have that strong opinion on Wayne Pierre, but if a NY court finds against him, I automatically think it’s a kangaroo court.

They’re shoving us towards a civil war day by day.

LaPierre lived should we say a “rather lavish life style” based on the donations of the members..I dropped my membership ten or fifteen years ago due to his fleecing the members...

As much as I DETEST Letitia James and these politically motivated persecutor lawfare zealots, WLP was and is a complete and utter self-dealing crook. So, I’m glad he got what he deserved. I am also glad that the damages were awarded to the NRA and not the government money-pit sink hole.

Maybe Letitia needs to replace Kamala. She seems to be more effective and more efficient.

I vaguely remember Glenn Beck being all over this long before the DA decided to make it a cause, saying gunowners should get out of the NRA and into Gunowners of America, but I might be getting the details mixed up.

LaPierre has been a controversial figure at the NRA for a long time.

Back in 1997 https://www.spokesman.com/stories/1997/may/04/charlton-heston-wins-nra-board-election/ this was written.

“.....Heston received 1,038 out of 1,410 ballots cast - about 74 percent of the vote - to beat out 157 other candidates for a lone seat on the 76-member board. The other 75 board members were chosen earlier in voting by mail.

Close by was the NRA’s top administrator, executive vice president Wayne R. LaPierre Jr., who nearly lost his job at a board meeting in February and whom Heston is trying to keep in office.....”

I can remember back even earlier where there were battles described on the pages of Shotgun News about who to elect to the NRA board of directors to keep the organization focused on the members needs.

While the NY AG’s lawsuit was clearly political, LaPierre was wasting member's money on a lavish lifestyle. The NRA leadership needs to focus on its various missions and not on having an ultra high paid leader.
