Jury finds NRA liable for mismanagement, says Wayne LaPierre violated duties

LaPierre and an NRA executive must pay a combined $6.35 million, the NY AG said.

After five days of deliberations, a jury in New York on Friday held the National Rifle Association liable for financial mismanagement and found that Wayne LaPierre, the group's former CEO, corruptly ran the nation's most prominent gun rights group.

The jury determined that LaPierre's violation of his duties cost the NRA $5.4 million, though he already repaid more than $1 million to the organization.

LaPierre, staring forward with his hands clasped in his lap, sat in the first row of the gallery while the jury read the verdict.

The New York Attorney General's Office sued the NRA and its senior management in 2020, claiming they misappropriated millions of dollars to fund personal benefits -- including private jets, family vacations and luxury goods. The accusations came at the end of a three-year investigation into the NRA, which is registered in New York as a nonprofit charitable corporation.

The NRA is laser gunsight focused on gun rights issues

Sorry, but this has never been true. The NRA has always been the "Country club" version of a gun rights group at best. The GOA is actually focused on the 2nd Amendment. I'm a member of GOA, NRA, and JPFO in that order. The NRA gets the press, the GOA does the work. The JPFO provides a moral backstop.

Go to their site and read the open letter GOA wrote to the NRA BOD about 30 years ago. I don’t think anything has changed much.

+1 insightful.

And, it's the organization that should have sued him. This should completely been a civil matter. The state shouldn't have been involved unless he violated the state's criminal code.

Absolutely true. The state should not have had standing in this.

I'm a member of the NRA because everyone knows what it is. Not because I think the organization is effective. I am a member of GOA because they are effective in the legal system, where it really counts. For me the JPFO is good because they are absolutists for the most part, but I think they are too small to do effective work. I'm a member, but don't expect much from them.

I'm not really a fan of the NRA, but if you wear a GOA hat, no one knows what it is.

It amazes me how many self-proclaimed pro-second amendment conservatives will side with a leftist New York jury whose only intent is to destroy the most effective conservative lobby group in the country. We conservatives always let the leftist media fool us into turning against our own best interests. The simplest explanation for why liberal causes consistently make progress and conservative interests continually lose ground is that the liberals reliably stand up for each other while conservatives never fail to turn on each other.

Keeping the NRA incorporated in NY was plainly stupid. It should have been moved to a red state where it isn't hated. I don't like to blame the victim, but this was predictable.

Having a gun rights organization incorporated in an anti-gun state like NY would seem to be a really stupid decision.

"a jury in New York."

Wouldn't it be nice if the people of New York could hold their politicians responsible for incompetence and corruption..

If you live in New York, get the HELL out of there while you still can..

Impossible to get a fair trial in NY if you are not a Democrat!

Will this verdict hold up under Appeal?
