Radical-left activist and former politician Nina Turner marked Presidents’ Day, the holiday officially named “Washington’s Birthday,” by attempting to vilify America’s first president and founding father as well as other early U.S. presidents.

In a post from Monday, Turner, a one-time Ohio state senator and current Senior fellow at Institute on Race, Power and Political Economy, wrote: “Reminder: George Washington owned human beings.”

In a follow-up post, she insisted “this President’s Day we must remember that 12 of the first 15 Presidents enslaved other human beings.”

“We must acknowledge how they shaped institutions and systems, and how those systems to this day uphold racism systemically,” she added.

Schools and universities teach slavery as if was only in America. No mention that it was worldwide, existed for thousands of years, and America was one of the first countries to end it.

Perverted gray matter between her ears. Totally controlled by and blaming past events. Pitiful.

Yes he did. And while it’s fashionable now to judge 18th century behavior by 21st century standards, that doesn’t make it right or even fair to those being judged. Who knows now what will be condemned in 2300s?

Yes and no. A couple of details.

Virginia, like other states, had a law about slaves that said you couldn't free them if you owed on a mortgage because the slaves were considered part of the estate. An exception is you can free them in your will.

As far as Martha Washington goes, remember that before she married George Washington she was a widow in the wealthy (slave owning) Custis family, before that she grew up in the wealthy (slaving owning) Dandridge family. As a young woman when she married Custis, her family gave her some slaves (as was the custom of the ultra-rich families in the day). She immediately freed them. (By the way, her great-grandaughter Mary Anna Custis did the same decades later when her family gave her some slaves in her marriage to Robert E Lee.) Any talk about Martha Washington and slavery should at least include this selfless act. When Martha Custis' husband died she inherited 1/3rd of his estate (the other 2/3rds going to his kids). When George courted her, one thing he did to get brownie points was give generous tips to the 84 slaves she inherited, which she legally could not free (https://www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/slavery/martha-washington-as-a-slaveowner/).

George inherited slaves, then bought slaves, then inherited more (through marrying Martha). As he got older and started hating the institution of slavery, he worked to reduce the number of slaves at Mt Vernon, while also worked to make our new nation abolitionist. Ultimately, he freed the slaves at Mt Vernon in his will. (https://www.mountvernon.org/george-washington/slavery/george-washingtons-will/). IMHO, he wasn't perfect at all, including with slavery. But he moved the needle in the right direction so that slavery was less of a norm than it was before him. I'm not perfect at all either. Hopefully I'm doing people right to improve society even if one day righteous sounding leftists denounce me like they do Washington.

I wondered how fast some literalist would swoop in and ruin a good running joke. Good thing love doesn't have anything to do with it.

Seriously though, these modern race hustlers are tiring, trying to apply their "politically correct" standards to different eras where people didn't have the luxury to agonize over perceived slights and injustices. These hucksters should learn from history and count the blessing that they're not only free to bitch, but make a lot of money doing so.

Washington freed his own slaves, but he was not able to free those belonging to Martha Washington because of the rules about dowry in effect. They belonged to her estate.

Really nice summary.

I didn’t know those details about Martha and Lee’s wife. Interesting.

I still stand by Washington is justifiably the most adulated man in history. The cultural things that popped up in addition to how people in his day and immediately after regarded him is unprecedented. Not to mention, not forced as in many tyrannies and communist societies.
