Italian foreign minister calls for formation of EU army

The European Union should form its own combined army that could play a role in peacekeeping and preventing conflict, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa, Tajani said that closer European cooperation on defence was a priority for the Forza Italia party that he leads.

"If we want to be peacekeepers in the world, we need a European military. And this is a fundamental precondition to be able to have an effective European foreign policy," he said in an interview published on Sunday.

"In a world with powerful players like the United States, China, India, Russia - with crises from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific - Italian, German, French or Slovenian citizens can only be protected by something that already exists, namely the European Union," he added.

...Tajani also said the 27-nation EU should streamline its leadership and have a single presidency, rather than the current structure of a European Council president and a European Commission president. The foreign minister became leader of Forza Italia following the death of Silvio Berlusconi last year.

There is a problem with the US ramping down on NATO and getting European countries to start paying their way.

As long as the USA was being the policeman, the EU countries neglected their military. This also gave the USA far more leverage.

By withdrawing from NATO, this opens the door for the EU countries to form this "EU army" and get a closer EU, less a confederation and more towards a state - which I do not think is a good idea.

All actions have consequences.

Europe can go to hell. Let them have their own army. Under no circumstances do I think the US military should be involved in Europe unless it’s go over there and stomp on their new EU army.

That was also a point of NATO - to prevent any such EU army

Well, time for the US to drop out of NATO, like now.

A passive threat aimed at the US.

Not biting. Good luck Europe.

“A passive threat aimed at the US.”

One common language would help.

Unlikely to be Italian...

Here’s the thing, I doubt there are many men in Europe who would actually want to defend Europe.

Just like the USA, they see their country’s getting invaded by millions of illegal alien’s, and the politicians care more about the illegals than the citizens. Who would want to defend that?

Let the fags join the EU Army and see how far they get before being raped by Muslims. The very idea of a EU Army brings visions of a skinny limp wrist soy boy in a dress and high heel shoes (just like Zelensky). /spit

If Spanish, the US could join—or at least—listen in.

This is a great plan. If the EU wants to go to war with Russia, it should spend the money, recruit the troops and pay for themselves and leave us out of it.

What’s most common, German and English?

I see this as a failure before ever gaining momentum.
The US MIC will never give up the money and power.

If the US drops out of NATO, the odds of a nuclear armed EU army go to 100%.

I prefer the term 'graduate' from NATO, after which it can assume a non-funding emeritus role.

Let Europe decide how it wants to deal with Russia on its own terms for a change.

The EU Army could be a formidable force. That is if they can stop the troops from getting stoned.
