As US allies reel from Donald Trump’s weekend comments encouraging Russia to attack European allies if they don’t meet NATO budget contribution goals, multiple former Trump advisers warn in my upcoming book that the former president will seek to formally withdraw the US from the NATO alliance if he wins a second term.
In “The Return of Great Powers”, which will be published March 12, a former senior US official, who served in both the Trump and Biden administrations at a high level, told me that if Trump defeats President Joe Biden in November “the US will be out of NATO.”
“NATO would be in real jeopardy,” John Bolton, Trump’s former national security adviser, agreed. “I think he would try to get out.”
Trump’s disparagement of US security commitments extends to its mutual defense agreements with South Korea and Japan as well, retired General John Kelly, who served as White House chief of staff to Trump, told me.
“The point is, he saw absolutely no point in NATO,” Kelly said in the book. “He was just dead set against having troops in South Korea, again, a deterrent force, or having troops in Japan, a deterrent force.”
“He thought (Vladimir) Putin was an okay guy and Kim (Jong Un) was an okay guy that we had pushed North Korea into a corner,” Kelly recalled. “To him, it was like we were goading these guys. ‘If we didn’t have NATO, then Putin wouldn’t be doing these things.’”

NATO is a treaty.
A treaty is a contract.
If the contract is violated, then it’s null and void.
The membership of NATO have not lived up to their contractual obligations.
The treaty is null and void.
Then the NORTH ATLANTIC folks will have to go it alone.
“NATO members should be concerned.”
You’re right, they SHOULD be concerned with their own defense. The treaty requires that they should pay a measly 2% gdp to defend their own interests. If they don’t pay their dues then they’re effectively dropping out of nato themselves. It’s not our job to defend them, or force them to pay their nato obligations as required. If they wanted to be a part of nato then they would live up to their obligations. If they’re not living up to their obligations, then the we are left to protecting our own interests.
I’ve said it over and over again and Jordan Peterson reflected it nicely. There is no deterrence without the credible threat of the use of force. But Peterson put it more eloquently...
“A harmless man is not a good man. A good man is a very dangerous man who has that under voluntary control” ~ Jordan Peterson

“… former president will seek to formally withdraw the US from the NATO alliance if he wins a second term.”
I already said I was voting for Trump…you don’t have to keep trying to sell it to me.
Let’s add the UN to that.
He needs Congressional approval. He can’t do it on his own.
Why should he? He only wants them to pay what they said they would. No more playing the USA for a chump.
“He only wants them to pay what they said they would.”
I agree. But the hyperbolic headline makes it sound as if he can make the decision unilaterally by executive order or something, and he can’t.
I’m already voting for Trump... they don’t have to sell me on it.

No he wont. Bolton is a scare monger. If he gets in, he may demand they pay their fair share again and not be at forever war.
“... any substantive resolution.”
Of which there have been none with any effect unless backed by the US. The UN is just a mechanism for channeling US funds to other people. Without US funds the UN has just as much influence as high school student government.
Let’s just get the Hell out of NATO!!! Europe needs to put their Big Boy pants on, and defend themselves, without our help and finances...
