Oregon university drops failing grades for students, citing 'GPA fixation'

The university's VP of Academic Affairs said the changes will no longer 'mask' students' 'demonstrated abilities'..

An Oregon university announced they will abandon failing letter grades, citing a "GPA fixation" that negatively impacts students.

Western Oregon University issued a news release earlier this month that revealed the school would be replacing "D-" and "F" grades with "no credit" to discourage undergrads from dropping out.

...

The difference is that the grade of NC will not negatively impact student GPAs,

...

the decision came after data from the university showed that 65% of freshman students who dropped out had earned at least one "F."

...

Vice President of Academic Affairs Jose Coll ... The GPA fixation we have as a country and the grading system that’s been in place for over 200 years has been used to determine who belongs and who is capable, although we know that similar to the SAT and ACT, many capable students have been prohibited from pursuing their post-secondary education due to these barriers,"

...

Several Ivy League colleges drew suspicion of grade inflation with so many students receiving high grades.

A report from December noted that 79% of Yale College students received an A for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Harvard University also reported that 70% of grades were A’s for the 2020-2021 academic year.

"Mean grades on a four-point scale were 3.80 in the 2020-21 academic year, up from 3.41 in 2002-03," the Harvard Crimson reported.

Won’t be long before the delusional people who run Leftist institutions like this will be awarding “participation grades” resulting in “participation diplomas” to students who just can’t cut it in a normal college curriculum.

If they get 'no grade' they can take the course again and not negatively impact their GPA.

And if this encourages more students to stick around for another semester or two, that positively affects WOU's bottom line with increased tuition revenue.

It’s pretty simple, then. I wouldn’t even consider hiring a graduate from there. Circular file.

Carlin said it best,

They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. Thats against their interests. Thats right. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table to figure out how badly they’re getting f____ by a system that threw them overboard 30 f_____ years ago. They don’t want that.

You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly sh____er jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you, sooner or later, ‘cause they own this f______ place. It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it.

Oregon high school students do not have to prove basic mastery of reading, writing or math to graduate from high school, either ..

In further news from the university, players on the varsity baseball team who make an out when up to bat will no longer have those plate appearances counted as ‘at-bats’, as those have been found to negatively affect their batting averages.

If you read the article with a mindset of preserving university revenues, it make more sense than the smokescreen of what an F really means. Also, this says that their faculty are not able to discriminate on the basis of performance. It seems that the University's moto should be changed to:

If you can fog a mirror, you can get your degree from WOU.
