U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert's middling finish in a straw poll Thursday night drew gasps from the crowd that had just witnessed the Colorado lawmaker face off against eight other Republicans in a congressional primary debate at a rec center in Fort Lupton.
The headline-grabbing incumbent's performance in the decidedly non-scientific survey — Boebert landed in fifth place with just over 10% of the vote, behind three veteran state lawmakers and a former talk radio host who ran last cycle for the U.S. Senate — surprised some in the room but drew shrugs from others, who pointed out that the hall was filled with local Republicans loyal to other candidates who shared the debate stage.
The 90-minute debate, which drew national attention, took place less than a month after Boebert, the state's most prominent elected Republican, joined the already crowded GOP primary in the sprawling 4th Congressional District, which covers Colorado's Eastern Plains, anchored by suburban Douglas County.
She announced in late December that would seek another term in Congress from the solidly Republican seat after moving from the more competitive Western Slope-based district she's represented since 2021. Boebert said during the debate that she recently moved to Windsor in Weld County.
Out of 117 votes cast, Logan County Commissioner Jerry Sonnenberg, a former longtime state state lawmaker, led the straw poll with 22 votes, followed by former House Minority Leader Mike Lynch, R-Wellington, who received 20 votes, Douglas County filmmaker Deborah Flora at 18 votes and House Minority Whip Richard Holtorf, R-Akron, with 17 votes.
Boebert got 12 votes, narrowly edging out former congressional nominee Peter Yu's 11 votes, with three more candidates — former state Sen. Ted Harvey, R-Highlands Ranch, Weld County Council member Trent Leisy and former congressional staffer Chris Phelen — trailing in single digits.

she’s toast
Good riddance to bad rubbish. Boebert is a trashy grifter who glommed onto MAGA to get rich. Congratulations to Colorado Republicans for getting close to ending her career.
A VERY funny Australian has our present administration down perfectly:

Boebert will get a handle on it, and stiffen her support among her new constituents.
I like Lauren Boebert. She’s been pretty MAGA. Her personal life is messy but I’m not judging.
I hope she wins.
Oh, dear. 😄
We can never figure it out. The fighters are always targeted, and we always pretend like they can easily be replaced. They play us and laugh.
Enjoy the useless RINO that replaces her.
Do they do straw polls in Colorado or do they vote in an election?
This was a brutal one liner from Rep Lynch:
“Could you, like, give the definition of carpetbagger for me?”
Her attempt to claim she moved to the district because “My boys needed a fresh start” came across as disingenuous and dishonest. How dare you! It was for my children! That’s a soundbite that will get a lot of play, highlighting not only her carpetbagging and dishonesty, but her circus show family.
The whole straw poll was like 120 people total, amongst like 8 candidates (these are not exact numbers, but close).
So pretty meaningless. Don’t let Ajholes like Gulliver Swift get you down.
It wasn’t a real poll. Just a canvass of people who attended the debate. You would expect these people to be somewhat politically active, and lean a little more right than the typical republican in the district. I wouldn’t put much weight to it, but Boebert didn’t have a good night.
She has no brains. She is a well known Representative in Congress AND she knows she’s in public and lets a creep fondle her in a theatre. Sorry, but she’s only screwing up her political career.
“Out of 117 votes cast”
Meaningless
I bet you swallow too huh.
Hopefully a happy ending is within her grasp.
“The fighters are always targeted, and we always pretend like they can easily be replaced.”
I agree.
Lauren Boebert has an excellent conservative voting record. The establishment wants to replace her with a moderate. The establishment usually wins.
And people wonder why the Republican party is also known as the Uniparty.
