The White House said Friday it was “deeply troubled” after Alabama executed a man using nitrogen gas in a first-of-its-kind capital punishment.
“The reports of Kenneth Smith and his death last night obviously is very troubling. It is very troubling to us as an administration, it is very troubling to us here at the White House,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.
“The president has long said and has had deep deep concerns with how the death penalty is implemented and whether it is consistent … with our values,” she added.
Smith was put to death Thursday in Alabama night after breathing nitrogen gas through a face mask, causing oxygen deprivation. It was the first time the method had been used to execute an American prisoner.

Nitrogen is a deadly gas. Everyone who lived in the 19th century and breathed that ~80% nitrogen mix is dead now. ;-)
Selective concern from leftists always totally forgets the anguish and panic of the last minutes of all the victims’ lives.
Just spends months or years wringing hands over the sadness of executing the convicted murderers. They get to live years or usually decades shooting hoops and watching TV in prison as the date is delayed.
Idea: make the executions so frequent they “unusual” part will be laughably obsolete.
Carey Dean Moore spent 38 years on death row by the time of his execution in 2018. He was sentenced to death in 1980.
Brandon Jones in Georgia in 2016. He was in prison 36 years and four months between first being sentenced to death and execution. His initial conviction had been overturned because jurors had consulted a Bible during deliberations. He was retried in 1997 and again convicted and sentenced to death.
Manuel Valle was executed in Florida on Sept. 28, 2011. The Supreme Court delayed his execution for several hours, and Justice Breyer dissented from the decision allowing it to go forward. Breyer wrote that Valle’s 33 years on death row were a cruel and unusual punishment: “I have little doubt about the cruelty of so long a period of incarceration under sentence of death.”

They should have started pumping the nitrogen without telling him as the thrashing was likely from holding his breath. Given his anti death penalty final statements it is possible he tried to put on a show. There is no doubt he was encouraged to do so prior to the execution.

The only thing that surprised me is that it took him more than 20 minutes to die. No one holds their breath for more than 4-5 minutes at most, so he was breathing the gas for fifteen minutes. After only a few minutes he should have been unconscious and unable to control his breathing at all, and should therefore have been dead shortly thereafter.
