BOGOTÁ, Colombia—Minnesota comedian Tou Ger Xiong had fallen in love with the expat lifestyle in the vibrant Colombian city of Medellín: stock trading by day, fine dining and dance clubs by night.
He was one of a rising number of Americans and foreign nationals who began flocking to the country after the Covid-19 pandemic, some on new digital nomad visas introduced to help spur a growing startup scene.
But hours after prosecutors say he went out on a date on Dec. 10, he was calling family and friends back home to wire him $2,000, telling them he had been kidnapped and held for ransom. The next day, police found Xiong’s lifeless body with multiple stab wounds and bruises after being tossed off a 260-foot cliff along the side of a stream in a lush, wooded area of a city renowned for its eternal spring climate and rolling green hills.

Xiong is one of at least eight Americans who died in Colombia’s second-largest city in November and December amid dozens of cases involving male tourists who were held captive and robbed, often after meeting women on dating apps, Medellín officials said. The deaths, some after the victims were drugged, and a spike in attacks against foreigners led the U.S. Embassy in Colombia to issue an alert this month urging caution for U.S. citizens meeting people through online dating platforms.

In some of the deaths, which the U.S. Embassy deemed suspicious, American men were found dead in their hotel rooms or rented apartments after outings with local women. In other attacks, thugs robbed and killed them on the street while they were on dates…. Others are believed to have died from mixing heavy drinking and the kind of mind-altering drugs gangs slip into drinks to incapacitate a victim before robbery.

In the mid 90s was invited to a university in Columbia by to give a lecture on my work. I requested approval from management of the very large company where I worked. I soon received a call from its head of security telling me that there was a risk of kidnapping and that in the event that happened they would NOT pay a ransom. It was a good trip. Soldiers armed with automatic weapons everywhere, bomb sniffing dogs and guys with mirrors looking under the car in every parking lot. Check points everywhere. Quite an experience.
If I ever felt the need to crack a nice bottle of German Rhein Hessein wine, then I did it at home. Safely tucked away from any DUI. Besides, I had invested in a really great stereo system, Pioneer turn table, Pioneer equalizer, Akai double cassette tape deck, nice Pioneer Receiver and two really nice Pioneer 450 watt speakers. Cost me a bundle, but I bought all of it through the PX in Germany. They had a plan in Europe, where you could buy on time at the PX and pay for it monthly. Your payment was based on how much you owed and how many months you had on your tour at the time. You had to have it paid up before you left Europe. Paid my system off in little less than three years.
Used to buy albums and tapes every month. At one time I had nearly 500 record albums and 200 cassette tapes. Gave the albums to a friend of mine. He is recording songs onto his computer. Maybe one of these days I can get a lot of that old 60s. 70s and 80 music on my computer. So, who needed clubs. And, I am still alive.
I hate that whores are called dates now.

But back in the day, you spent weeks or months before breaking up. And you STILL got Your bunny got boiled or your car keyed.
Today, the crazy ones plaster their crazy all over social media. There is immediate discovery and exit. And no property damage - the crazy are on to their next conquest.
The guys are no different…so decent young women also have the ability to run away quickly.
There are decent mates in America. It’s just requires a different due diligence. But it’s not simple.. and that’s a shame.
Mr. Tou Ger Xiong forgot rule #1 - No woman actually likes a man who hasn't already established social proof of his value. This is why dating sites are worthless for 95% of men. Colombia is not some magic paradise where the rules of human behavioral psychology don't apply. Scammers abound - and the technology makes their task even easier.

It used to be that a young American man can get married in this country. That's not possible anymore. So can you blame them for going to Colombia?
