A senior Hezbollah commander was killed in an Israeli drone strike on his car in southern Lebanon, a Lebanese security source told CNN on Monday, as fears of a wider regional conflict escalate.
The official, Wissam Tawil, is the most senior member of the Shiite militant group to be killed in an Israeli strike since Hezbollah and Israel began trading fire across the Lebanese-Israeli border on October 8, the day after Hamas carried out the deadliest terror attack in Israel’s history.
In a statement, Hezbollah also acknowledged the death of Tawil, who also went by the nom de guerre Hajj Jawad, in an Israeli attack. The paramilitary group shared pictures of him alongside other top Hezbollah officials and Qasem Soleimani, the former commander of the Iranian elite unit that handles the country’s overseas operations who was killed in a US airstrike four years ago, an apparent indication of Tawil’s stature.
CNN has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment.

Hassan Nasrallah who dwells in Beruit has been put on notice. Do you prefer to live or follow the dictates of Iran?
As this Israeli counterattack continues to grow, it’s becoming more apparent that the Hamass Loser Brigade really screwed up. Another old “sleeping giant” thing.
May all of the virgins look like Helen Thomas and Hillary Clinton.
Who remembers the Bush Doctrine? It supposedly declared open-season on terrorists. No sanctuary. Also, the Global War on Terror will not be won in a short time.
Kind of funny that on the 60th anniversary of the start of “War on Poverty”, Poverty seems to be winning (unless we spend several trillion dollars more).
Netanyahu apparently is determined to expand this into a regional war. Actually I think he planned this all along and the stand down on Oct7 was intentional. He thought he’d go down in Israeli history as the person who cleared out Gaza, but I don’t think it’s gonna turn out that way. A regional wars means the end of Israel and the US most likely ejected from that region altogether.
People on here are overestimating the military strength of Israel and the US. A regional war will be catastrophic for everyone involved. The US doesn’t have anywhere near the military assets necessary deployed over there to rescue Israel if the region ignites against it.
Most Arab countries quietly want Hamas gone.
The West no longer engages in ‘total war’, that’s why we do not win wars any longer...
Unfortunately, wars must be fought in such a way your opponent begs for mercy and then you’ve totally destroyed their will to fight and peace can be achieved.
You’re talking Arab leaders, not the population. Jordan is on the verge of coming apart. So are the populations in Egypt and Turkey. Actually I’m hearing now that its not safe for either US or Israeli citizens to visit Turkey now.
It REQUIRES “a wider conflict” to destroy the terrorists and punish their supporters!
You’re naive if you think all the terrorists can be killed. What we call terrorists here are considered freedom fighters over there. And the current fighting is just creating more of them and radicalizing the populations in the region. Israel is a tiny country and not easily defended if all of its neighbors turn against it.
oh, well then, lets just give up and let them take over.....
Nobody is suggesting that either. People on here are reacting emotionally to the situation over there instead of rationally and that’s not a good idea.
Militarily, it is the ONLY way to stop it!
I’ve seen 2 top Israeli military leaders admitting on video that it would be impossible to eliminate Hamas completely. They say Hamas isn’t just a collection of people it’s an idea that will never go away among the people.
You can't stop thought crimes, but you can deter people from acting on them.
WWII was an entirely different situation - the Axis powers were fighting against the rest of the world. In the current situation its almost only the US & Israel possibly going against potentially the entire region with Russia (and possibly China) sitting in the background providing Iran with military support.
Sure we can bomb Iran’s infrastructure but then they close off the Persian Gulf which is a lot easier to do than shutting of Red Sea transport. That would crash economies worldwide. Then Hezbollah shuts down Israel’s gas fields. China gets much of it’s oil from Iran:

and Russia is in cahoots with them militarily now.
From a strategic perspective both Russia & China are hoping developments here wind up with the US being chased out of the region. And with the way things are playing out there’s a good chance of that happening.
If we had a President with American interests at heart, there are clear solutions.
Hit Iranian MILITARY targets and oil processing facilities, in addition to sanctions on Iranian oil.
You don't wait for Iran to shut down the Persian Gulf, you preclude it!
