New York bill would force some Chick-fil-A locations to open on Sundays

A new bill filed in the New York State Assembly aims to force some Chick-fil-A locations to operate seven days a week, threatening the fast food chain's longstanding policy of keeping its restaurants closed on Sundays.

The legislation proposed last week would require all food vendors operating at rest stops owned by the New York State Thruway Authority to open every day, and names Chick-fil-A as the reason behind the move.

"While there is nothing objectionable about a fast food restaurant closing on a particular day of the week, service areas dedicated to travelers is an inappropriate location for such a restaurant," the bill's justification reads. "Publicly owned service areas should use their space to maximally benefit the public. Allowing for retail space to go unused one seventh of the week or more is a disservice and unnecessary inconvenience to travelers who rely on these service areas."

Ever since it opened in 1946, Chick-fil-A has closed its locations on Sunday. It now has 3,000 locations in the U.S. The company currently operates seven restaurants owned by New York's Thruway Authority, and the proposed legislation would impact all future contracts.

“The pro-LGBT lawmakers are trying to pass a bill that would effectively bar the famous chicken joint — which has gotten criticism for donating to anti-LBGT causes — from New York State Thruway rest stops.”

“’Chick-fil-A has had a terrible record on LGBT rights. I’m not going to not say that clearly,’ he said when asked if that was a motivation behind the bill.”

I drove the at least twice weekly over ten years. Mostly ate at Roy Rogers. I’ve very familiar with them, mostly on I-87 going from Malone via Plattsburg then to/from New York City or Springfield, Massachusetts.

Hmmmmmm.....using their own wokism against them, just identify Sunday as their own Ramadan. Then you could label the government Anti-Muslim. The government will back down faster than a Clinton could fundraise.

Ask the local SDA and Orthodox Jewish people to volunteer to work one day a week.

The Orthodox would not be able to work in an area that combines cheese and meat. They wouldn't be thrilled that the chicken was not killed in a kosher manner. They CERTAINLY would have NOTHING to do with the bacon or pork sausage that Chick Fil A serves.

If it comes down to it, they can just vacate the travel plazas. Not that many in New York, anyway.

It is only addressing the locations at the rest areas

That's just the start, once the camel's nose is in the tent, then they will demand all locations be open on Sundays.

It may be old school...but Chick Fil A has always believed in Sunday as a day for worship or “rest” since its beginning.

"Goldman Sachs is the financial backer of that Irish company."

Thanks for that info. Either Cuomo or Hochul finalized this deal. Like I said in my previous comment, the rest stop near me has been closed for well over a year with no work being done on it. Somebody's making money off this deal, while the people who ride the Thruway are inconvenienced having to drive 40 to 50 extra miles to get to the next open rest stop, not just to find food, but to take a leak. I'm a 76 year old woman who doesn't have to take the Thruway very often, but when I do visit my oldest son who lives 1 1/2 hours away in Troy, NY, I usually have to stop at the rest stop just before the Albany exit. If that specific rest stop was closed for renovations, I'd end up having to get off the Thruway just to find a bathroom.

Chick-fil-A has almost 3,000 locations in the US. I would guess they will just close these 7 locations and move on.

On my drive to NYC there are three rest stops. The first one doesn’t count because it’s when I enter the thruway. The next two are closed for renovations. Gas only. Who planned this? that’s a long 71 mile ride without a stop. Fix one first then work on another one.

Recently I did notice a Chick-fil-a sign on one of the stops. Since those stops have many stores and they are closed at night, I see no problem Chick being closed one day on Sunday. Tradition.

I miss toll booths.

The company currently operates seven restaurants owned by New York's Thruway Authority, and the proposed legislation would impact all future contracts.

Just seven? Unless the contract says Chik-fil-A has to be open 7 days a week for these locations, I don't see how the state has a leg to stand on.

When contract renewal comes up then sure, the state can demand what it wants and Chik-fil-A can decide they don't want to do business like that and leave.

I suspect this is more than just these seven locations though and once a state can force a business to do something it otherwise wouldn't, the state won't stop at just Chik-fil-A being open seven days for these locations.

Once the government's nose is under the tent, there's no stopping it. Just ask the former "Sweet Cakes by Melissa" folks in Colorado about that.
