Israeli soldiers shot and killed three Israeli hostages in northern Gaza after misidentifying them as threats, the Israel Defense Forces said.

“During combat in Shejaiya, the IDF mistakenly identified three Israeli hostages as a threat. As a result, the troops fired toward them and they were killed,” IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a news briefing on Friday.

“During searches and checks in the area in which the incident occurred, a suspicion arose over the identities of the deceased,” Hagari added. “Their bodies were transferred to Israeli territory for examination, after which it was confirmed that they were three Israeli hostages.”

If the hostages are highly valuable bargaining chips to be traded and re-used by Hamas (as to demand a ceasefire extension) then how would they not be in a tunnel room or an internal room in a hospital basement with no proximity to live fire going on? Or were they moved into a dangerous position to set this up?

I think that it is very possible they were being used as “bait”.

Last week 9 soldiers were killed after they were lured into a trap. I believe they were part of the same group. This would cause a lot of paranoia.

My guess is Hamas put them in their gear and weapons and then staged them in some way to be found and shot.

They may have been drugged, as you say, and unable to respond to commands from the IDF appropriately.

What do their toxicology reports show? It would be typical of Hamas to drug a hostage then release them in the area of IDF soldiers so they’d perhaps ignore commands or behave suspiciously or as expected of a civilian.

Makes sense. The hostages (during the recent ceasefire) were drugged so they'll be sedated before they were released to Israel.

I saw a post that said they had a white flag but were shot anyway. Why would Israeli troops trust a HAMAS white flag, though? It would likely be a setup for a suicide bomb or an IED.

Tragic, but no matter what happens in this operation the focus must be first and foremost on preventing future innocent Israelis from being victimized by these animals as so many were on October 7th. That will require killing every last member of Hamas, and I’m not sure even that will be sufficient since I don’t believe there is any “Palestinian” that can be trusted, whether Hamas or merely a “civilian.”
