We hear it so often that it sounds routine. “I am not an anti-Semite. I am an anti-Zionist,” the occasional anti-Semite confesses with astonishing candor. Such openness reveals the speaker’s ignorance about their own racism, a prejudice lodged in their unconscious though quite close to the surface. Or they do know it, and the discursive alibi is meant to hide it.
It is not coincidental. Jihadist fundamentalists use the term “Zionist” as a disqualification towards Israelis and Jews in general. It is always the Zionist aggressor, the Zionist invader, the Zionist occupier. Zionists or not, since, in the strict sense of the term, not all Jews are Zionists, the real problem they have is the Jews. And this is the debate of our times, yet again.
Zionism is a political movement … based on the notion that the Jewish people, a nation in an ancient diaspora, are worthy of their political and legal home—namely, their own state. As such, it is a nationalist ideology…
…
Anti-Zionism” expresses a similar racism, as it challenges the right of a people to have their own state, for which it is necessary to dissolve their identity, the Jewish identity. As an intellectual operation, this also implies ignoring reality, that is, denying the existence of what has existed for seventy-five years, the State of Israel, or worse still, proposing its elimination.
Western sympathizers of Hamas do exactly that when they repeat, “From the (Jordan) river to the (Mediterranean) sea, Palestine will be free.” They associate themselves with a project of obliteration of what remains in between, the State of Israel. This necessarily implies the extermination of its population, a genocidal project whose most explicit notice, but not the first, is dated October 7, 2023.
Anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism are synonyms.

Kind of like “I’m not pro-abortion I’m pro-choice.”
That’s like saying “I am okay with Jews, but not in Israel”.
WF Buckley, of blessed memory, once said that, “while not all anti-Zionists are anti-Semites, no anti-Semite is ever pro-Israel.”
“while not all anti-Zionists are anti-Semites, no anti-Semite is ever pro-Israel.”
I’ll use that when I slammed on here as anti-semitic.
Because I am pro Israel.
I don’t agree with this premise completely and it’s often taken to extreme
Any nuance about the roots of the conflict can mean to some you’re not solid enough or an anti semite
Or more issues like Musk commented on while true folks want all dispensation adoration
One can fully support Israel and discuss the roots and what to do long term
Israelis I have known forever sure do
He was talking about Pat Robertson, way back in the day, before my hair turned gray.
That’s good description
Most of these cretins are leftists, and they don’t try hard to hide it.
However, there are/were a few “conservatives” that fall into this bucket. The biggest was probably Joseph Sobran. Indeed, Buckley fired him from NR over Sobran’s slipped mask. Buckley also penned a massive/40,000-word article In Search of Anti-Semitism where he basically called Pat Buchanan an anti-Semite.
This masquerade rears its head every now and then on FR, but it’s usually called out quickly.
This is also comparable to gun controllers SWEARING they support the 2nd Amendment.
I reject the premise.
“anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism are synonymous.”
I could care less if you are black, white, orange, or semite.
I only care about your moral character which are obvious to me by your actions.
I know a lot of people from very diverse backgrounds, and granted while most of them are the best and brightest, there are still a few that if they were drowning I would not lend a hand.
but without regard to race or religion there are many I would without even a second thought.
...so sayeth the ADL. A real “friend” of conservatives.
The firing of Pat Buchannan and Joseph Sobran was coincident with the death of National Review.
Yes, I was a subscriber back then and read it cover to cover.
Until I wasn’t ...
I think that it is possible to oppose the settler program of certain nationalist Israeli parties while at the same time having no problem at all with the normal bacon cheeseburger eating American jew.
