Democrats change primary election date making Michigan Republican primary votes completely meaningless
Lapeer County Tribune (Michigan) ^ | 11/22/2023 | Scott McMahan

Posted on 11/24/2023 4:13:27 PM PST by DFG

Now that state legislators have adjourned two months early for the year, the Michigan primary election will be held on February 27, 2024, putting the Republican primary in violation of Republican National Convention (RNC) rules so that Michigan delegates will no longer be counted towards the winner of the Republican National Convention.

To stem a competition between states to move the primaries earlier and earlier, the RNC established a longstanding rule that only New Hampshire, Iowa, Nevada, and South Carolina can hold their primaries prior to March 1, as those states have done so for decades. The penalty set by the RNC is the stripping of up to 90% of the state's delegates.

“The primary this year will be nothing more than a beauty contest,” said former State Representative and current Lapeer County Commissioner Gary Howell (R) in a statement to the Tribune. Howell went on to say, “Our vote will not be counted by the RNC. It will be of no legal consequence whatsoever.”

The moving of the Michigan primary election from the second Tuesday of March to the last Tuesday of February was a move that was spearheaded by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and passed along strictly partisan lines, with every Democrat in the house and Senate voting for the move and every Republican opposing it. State law determines that any bill that passes without a two-thirds supermajority requires a 90-day window without a challenge in congress before it can be signed into law by the Governor.

The demobolsheviks care nothing about personal freedom and the rights of individuals. They will do anything, whatever the consequences to others, to push their self-promoting agenda. Like Marx, who left the support of his children to Engels, while he pursued selfish personal ‘academic/intellectual’ glory, the demobolsheviks and the left in general are driven only by their egos - not their compassion, which is pathetically under-developed.

Whitmer is one of the worst. She and that other Nazi, Hochul, are as evil as they come. Totalitarians of the first order.

Maybe the Republicans should dump the primary in Michigan and hold caucuses instead.

The article explains it. If the RNC changes the rules for Michigan, they have to change them for everyone.

Maybe, they could just change them for Michigan and explain why, but that allows everyone else to special pleading too.

cripes...thanks...This is it, I reckon. I missed it or didn't recognize it.

Unless the RNC changes its rules, which could unleash the floodgates to primaries being held nearly a year before the general election,

I suppose I ought to go read their rules....

thanx again.

These people would stab their own mothers in the back to get or retain power.

In reading the RNC rules, I wonder if it’s the state party that can change their rules to be in compliance with RNC Rule 16? so no primary, let the state republican committee select the delegates and alternates ? ( some of this stuff makes my head spin )

from the RNC Rule 16:

(c) Timing and Allocation.

(1) No primary, caucus, convention, or other process to elect, select, allocate, or
bind delegates to the national convention shall occur prior to March 1, nor shall any such process occur after the second Saturday in June in the year in which a national convention is held or less than forty-five (45) days before the national convention is scheduled to
begin.

(d) General.
In all elections or selections of delegates or alternate delegates to the national convention, the following rules shall apply:

(1) Delegates and alternate delegates to the national convention may be elected,
selected, allocated, or bound only in one of the following manners:
(i) by primary election;
(ii) by the Republican state committee;
(iii) by state and/or congressional district conventions;
(iv) by any method consistent with these rules by which delegates and alternate delegates were elected, selected, allocated, or bound to the most recent Republican National Convention from that state; or
(v) by Rule No.14(a)(2) of these rules.

(2) In electing or selecting delegates and alternate delegates to the national convention, no state law shall be observed which hinders, abridges, or denies to any citizen of the United States, eligible under the Constitution of the United States to hold the office of President of the United States or Vice President of the United States, the right or privilege of being a candidate under such state law for the nomination for President of the United States or Vice President of the United States or which authorizes the election or selection of a number of delegates or alternate delegates from any state to the national convention different from that fixed in these rules.
