Gaza has become a moonscape in war. When the battles stop, many fear it will remain uninhabitable

Israel's military offensive has turned much of northern Gaza into an uninhabitable moonscape. Whole neighborhoods have been erased. Homes, schools and hospitals have been blasted by airstrikes and scorched by tank fire. Some buildings are still standing, but most are battered shells.

Nearly 1 million Palestinians have fled the north, including its urban center, Gaza City, as ground combat intensified. When the war ends, any relief will quickly be overshadowed by dread as displaced families come to terms with the scale of the calamity and what it means for their future.

Where would they live? Who would eventually run Gaza and pick up the pieces?

“I want to go home even if I have to sleep on the rubble of my house,” said Yousef Hammash, an aid worker with the Norwegian Refugee Council who fled the ruins of the urban refugee camp of Jabaliya for southern Gaza. “But I don't see a future for my children here.”

The Israeli army’s use of powerful explosives in tightly packed residential areas — which Israel describes as the unavoidable outcome of Hamas using civilian sites as cover for its operations — has killed over 13,000 Palestinians and led to staggering destruction. Hamas denies the claim and accuses Israel of recklessly bombing civilians.

“When I left, I couldn’t tell which street or intersection I was passing,” said Mahmoud Jamal, a 31-year-old taxi driver who fled his northern hometown of Beit Hanoun this month. He described apartment buildings resembling open-air parking garages.

In the seven weeks since Hamas’ unprecedented Oct. 7 attack, Israel unleashed more munitions than the United States did in any given year of its bombing campaign against the Islamic State group — a barrage the U.N describes as the deadliest urban campaign since World War II.

Bulldoze the rubble into a perimeter wall, fill it to the brim with salt water until not even roaches remain underground. Then terraform it into a beach resort

Looking at the destruction of Europe after WWII vs the destruction in Gaza City, it would not surprize me if the Palesimians were incapable of cleaning up and rebuilding the mess they brought upon themselves.

Europeans were able to rebuild, with some help. These guys, I doubt it.

Oh I don’t know, they are pretty good at building tunnels.

Just imagine if the same effort that they put into building tunnels was put into construction projects to improve the desert.

Just bulldoze the rubble into a wall around the south part of gaza. Then they can view their old homes forever.

How did we miss it?

Lot of people don't believe we did miss it, or at least the people in charge didn't.

Where can a people go to are obsessed with hate and killing people?

They should have no say as to where they are taken. War reparations and all that entails. They started the massacre of Israeli innocents, and they must be held to account. To heck with the international howling.

Israel is a tiny speck of land in comparison to Arab lands surrounding it. But Arabs won't take them. There are many islands in Southeast Asia where they can be dumped. Mostly uninhabited islands with more land than what Gaza has for two million inhabitants. Load them up on ships, and dump them on an island.

I bet that Arab nations will then supply them with everything they need to survive.

I’m sure the Japanese would be suorised to learn they don’t exist as an ‘automonous entity’ or South Koreans, or Germans eyc etc etc. They all rely on the American security umbrella
Is there a problem with that?

If you have to ask, we probably disagree.

It's not our job to provide "security umbrellas", and based on history since 1965, relying on us is probably a very bad idea.

A the moment, our "allies" Taiwan, Ukraine, and Israel all have the ability to drag us into wars we can't win - and an "ally" is usually a two way street - none of these "allies" has ever shed a drop of blood with us in any of the failed imperial wars we have fought since 1991.

What you call the "American security umbrella" belongs over the Rio Grande.
