The American population is looking more like Asians, with voluntary face masking as people go about their daily routines.
Rates of COVID-19 are manageable, normal life has resumed and mandates are gone, with few exceptions at discrete businesses or schools. Yet masks have gained a foothold in American society, a remarkable change after face coverings sparked public spats and questions about cultural acceptance.
“Masks are at least acceptable, even though they are not widely employed,” said William Schaffner, an infectious diseases specialist at Vanderbilt University. “At the moment, there’s a segment of the population that is very interested in health, very interested in prevention. I think they tend to be older.”
Mask use is not as ubiquitous as it was at the height of the COVID-19 crisis in 2020 and 2021. Still, it is not unusual to see a smattering of people wearing masks at grocery stores, at indoor concerts or on commuter trains.
Ray Meeks regularly wears a black mask with his green cap and fluorescent jacket as he works as a crossing guard at a busy intersection in Maplewood, New Jersey. He caught COVID-19 in 2021 and would like to avoid a repeat.
“It wasn’t nice,” Mr. Meeks said. “I’m 70 years old and, you know, I guess it’s easy for my immune system to be compromised.”
A KFF survey taken this month found that 30% of Americans would consider wearing masks in crowded places when asked about COVID-19 precautions for the colder months.

I see a very small handful of obviously Democrat suburban soccer moms wearing them but that’s about it.
Re: 19 - I’ve had this happen a couple of times. I ask them to speak louder.
I start hacking profusely near them.
😂😂😂🤣
You are a very bad person.
How well does it work?
Seems like some people would wear a mask because they think you can get COVID from a toilet seat. Why they would want to be able to breathe with their head hovering over a toilet seat I have no idea, but then who am I to decide? /s
It is illegal to wear a mask to a political rally in many southern states. Known as the KKK laws, it prevents terrorists from hiding their identity. I’d like to see the KKK laws nationalized.
In eastern PA I’m seeing many people wearing them again.
Mostly overweight women and people in their early 20s…stupid runs deep.
“I rarely see masks where I live.”
Same for me here in East TN. Once in a while,, but hardly ever.
That’s funny. “We will we will mock you.”
Those who followed the restrictions most closely when the pandemic hit are the most likely to be suffering from stress, anxiety and depression, academics at Bangor University have found
Or, per Albion Wilde…
It's backwards. People with the worst mental health are the ones who flocked to obey to all the restrictions, obediently worrying and feeling inferior to the almighty governments.
We see a few in the grocery stores... Based on the look, dress and mask type it’s some tourist from the city.
My next bumper sticker will be: IF YOU’RE NOT FROM HERE, LEAVE.
I’m in and out of NYC all the time and masks are pretty rare even there. Even before Covid you saw Asian women wearing them.
In the Biloxi area, I usually see 2-3 folks in Walmart with masks on...
“Rates of Covid” were always bogus, but the WP is dutiful in continuing the false narrative.
ditto here
or wearing low IQ number on their sleeve
As I get older and really don’t care about the opinions of “Maskerbaters” any more, I find a little bit of “crop dusting” is the perfect silent revenge.
Yep, one of these days I’ll start acting my age but until then, I will continue to harass “Maskerbaters”
And the zombies obey, Im still seeing husband and wife in thier car windows rolled up and fully masked
‘It’s obvious you can scare people into believing absolute nonsense and control their minds with so much fear, they become mindless globs of Jello.’
something organized religions have known for centuries, and have taken great advantage in so doing...
How well does it work?
Oh, I wish I could take credit for that, but I was laughing at Right Brother’s comment at Post 12.
However, now they I’ve read that, I may just get a tickle in my throat on the rare occasion I see a masker. 😄😆
1. I see very few even in the woke area where I live and work.
2. They’re not healthy. Masks make it harder to breath fresh air — people and animals have open breathing holes for a reason. Not healthy just because doctors wear them in operating rooms.
“The American population” - written by somebody that is probably in a very liberal city. Sure, it might look that way from their viewpoint.
Where I am in Michigan they’re practically gone, quite rare to see at this point.
Same goes for all liberal reporters, they’re completely disconnect from anything outside their surroundings.
