A Royal Navy nuclear submarine equipped with Trident missiles suffered a huge malfunction that sent it into an endless dive before the vessel was righted moments before the crew faced being crushed by underwater pressure, it was claimed today.
The Vanguard class sub had been carrying 140 crew when its depth gauge suddenly failed while on a mission in the Atlantic.
It caused a frantic scrabble with engineers managing to stop the submarine and its nuclear reactor from plunging further just moments before disaster struck.
The deep sea vessel, carrying Trident 2 missiles, was on patrol when the depth indicators stopped working, with its crew falsely believing it was level when in fact it was diving deeper into the ocean.
It was only when engineers at the back of the sub found a second gauge indicating they were headed towards the 'danger zone' that they sounded the alarm.

They must also have internal gravity as no one noticed the downward slant of the boat.
And or journo exaggeration
Exactly right. Critical systems have multiple redundant sensors and logic. “Auctioneers” decide which is the correct measured value based on multiple sensor readings. This is old tech and has always been an area of intense R&D.
I’ve never been in a submarine. Can you really get disoriented and not know you are descending? I could see this if you are maintaining a level position and descending without tilting the sub down. But sinking in a controlled level attitude would be slower than diving toward the bottom, wouldn’t it?
As a mechanical engineer (but not a submariner), this story strikes me as just plain stupid.
I’ve got to tell my brother about this: retired Navy, who used to be in subs.
Of course. I didn’t consider that the “journalists” they have on military beats often have no idea about the things they report on, so it could be simple misinterpretation on their part.
I mean, if they have shown they don’t understand naval vessels when they call a frigate a “battleship” (which I have seen) how could anyone expect them to deconstruct a technical explanation in order to properly make an understandable news article that is somewhat accurate?
That is possible.
Take that, Putin!!!!
Q. Why do the British drink their beer warm?
A. They have Lucas refrigerators.
Good thing someone was paying attention.
Which is why I think this explanation is BS. “Found a second gauge” my ass.

Or its a concocted, “believable” story to cover up the real and classified reasons.
Uh... since when?
One comment of note. Especially on You Tube, Russian vessels are called battleships.
That does seem ignorant and idiotic but I have concluded that it is a matter of translation where any war ship translates to a battle ship
The lack of connotation between a frigate and a “battleship” is lost in translation
Agreed. It could be classified, or it could be ass-covering.
True...I have seen that.
I have also seen it on more than one occasion in the US media, which makes me roll my eyes. I have also seen them call a B-52 a “fighter plane”, and they make no effort at all to understand rank or unit construction/designation.
I should chalk that up to ignorance, but have always been suspicious that it is willful ignorance!
I don’t understand how the air could heat to the surface of the sun before it imploded. I would think that alone would vaporize anybody in it before it did. I would think the worst nightmare would be in a sub with no way to get out as it fills with water like that movie “The Abyss” where they can’t get the door open and the Captain has to watch them drown.
We had a faulty sensor that indicated that the flap on the snorkel was closed when in fact it was stuck open. This resulted in flooding when we dove as water poured into the upper level. Surface! Surface! Surface!
Yeah, I can just envision it...
CREWMAN #1: "Irregardless" is not a word!! CREWMAN #2: Yes it is! It's used all the time!!! CREWMAN #1: NO!! You're thinking of "irrespective"!!!! I already let you have 21 points for "woke"!!!! CREWMAN #2: Well you should have because "woke" is a real word!!!! CREWMAN #1: NO IT'S NOT! IT'S SLANG!! CREWMAN #2: WHERE'S MY DICTIONARY? AGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! CREWMAN #1: THAT'S MY DICTIONARY!!! AAAAAAGHGHGHGHGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!
Lol... Owned a several British bikes and cars, so I’m hip to it.
Very odd. There must be more to the story, but we’ll never get the details (classified).
Good thing that the nukes were paying attention. I wonder why this is a headline? UK MOD needs ‘moar money’ no doubt.
How could a competent and certified crew "discover" another depth gauge in a rear compartment? Submariners are crosstrained in multiple qualifications. A large chunk of everyone on the boat knows every corner, gauge and valve.
In this case there is probably less to the story.
