A recent post on X, formerly known as Twitter, shows Israeli officials handing out what appear to be M-4 or similar versions of the American M-16 type rifle to non-uniformed Israelis. Israel suffered thousands of casualties in the October 7 raid/invasion and massacres conducted by Hamas. The raid showed how vulnerable a disarmed population is against lightly armed and armored adversaries. The Israeli government had long practiced a staple of socialist regimes: disarm the population to enforce a doctrine of a monopoly of force by the government.
If there are locally armed populations, they can reduce casualties tremendously through armed defense. Their capability is multiplied if they are backed up by quick response forces, either military or police.
At the time of the successful Hamas raid into Israel, less than 2% of the Israeli population had access to small arms. It has been reported that 148,000 Israelis had permits to carry. The population of Israel has been reported at 9.7 million. 148,000 Israelis are 1.5% of the Israeli population.In one account posted on X, an Israeli special forces officer, who was allowed to have a Glock 19 and some spare magazines in his home, killed 10-14 Hamas attackers. Many, many of the other members of his kibbutz were killed or taken hostage. At about 10:18 minutes into the video, his wife says:

Why is Israel handing out guns?? Because they banned them from private possession in the first place!

Full auto are ammo eaters. The cost of operating a full auto is 5x that of semi when looking at ammo cost.
Israel was founded by secular Jews as a socialist state.
They have been moving towards capitalism.

<><>provided social assistance to 240,000 low-income UKRANIAN families in UKRAINE,

<><>financed finding markets for UKRANIAN small businesses in UKRAINE.
It is wise not to think of the Ukraine funds as expense but investment.
There are great future dividends to be paid by having a crippled and destitute Russia.

There is nothing like getting a thousand or two neighbors shot, raped, and beheaded to rethink that guns are not so bad after all.
It allows collectors to buy rare and valuable guns for a bargain price and saves them from the torch. And if you are smart, you can unload some really POS and make money.
I was very surprised to learn that Israel had tight control until now.

That 3% number during the revolution means approximately 97% of armed civilians did not fight for American independence. Further, your initial posts would (hypothetically) exclude Kibbutz members from the 97% because being armed would have been anathema.
Indeed, it is those armed, trained and willing few who make all of the difference. The 97% plus on the sidelines are not relevant, and that would certainly include communist Kibbutz members.
If I have misunderstood please let me know.

Hindsight, as one has recently learned, but Israel sold off a generation of Mauser rifles, and probably other "obsolete" weapons that could have been given (ye$, given) to their general public, for what is now obviously good reason.
But for the stupidity of politicians.
The local militia use 3% as a rally cry.
The stone cold Fighters.
