Ukraine has destroyed one of Putin's newly-built warships in a daring missile strike in Russian-annexed Crimea.

The downed vessel was named as the newly-built Askold missile ship, one of the most modern in Vladimir Putin's navy.

-snip-

Ukrainian sources later indicated the destroyed vessel was the Kalibr-missile carrying 197ft-long Askold, which was poised to enter service, or one of two others of the same Karakurt class.

Try this

In some branches of the military, the shortage of personnel has become even more dire than the deficit in arms and ammunition. One of Zelensky’s close aides tells me that even if the U.S. and its allies come through with all the weapons they have pledged, “we don’t have the men to use them.”

Since the start of the invasion, Ukraine has refused to release official counts of dead and wounded. But according to U.S. and European estimates, the toll has long surpassed 100,000 on each side of the war. It has eroded the ranks of Ukraine’s armed forces so badly that draft offices have been forced to call up ever older personnel, raising the average age of a soldier in Ukraine to around 43 years.

Now recruitment is way down. As conscription efforts have intensified around the country, stories are spreading on social media of draft officers pulling men off trains and buses and sending them to the front. Those with means sometimes bribe their way out of service, often by paying for a medical exemption. Such episodes of corruption within the recruitment system became so widespread by the end of the summer that on Aug. 11 Zelensky fired the heads of the draft offices in every region of the country.

Anyone who has to be “dragged off the street” to fight for his country (when invaded, not to invade someone else) is unworthy of the air he breathes. That goes double for deserters.

There are many exceptions to this sentiment. What if the country is overthrown from within by Revolution?

Obvious “time” isn’t concerning for Putin....if it were he coule have finished this long ago. Keeping it going is both Zelensky’s and Putin’s advantage.

“Big whoop, Ukraine is still losing ...”

You may well be right, I’ll confess I do not have any idea of who is ‘winning’ or ‘losing’ this fight.

But when this ‘special operation’ started, it was expected that all of Ukraine would be conquered in a matter of weeks. No matter what else happens, this has not gone as Russia hoped.

I’ve been hearing about all these great Ukraine victories for years now....

Seems made up. I suspect Russia is winning a slow grind war of attrition. Fake news stories, notwithstanding

Why did your parliament honor this Nazi, and more important, why is he being allowed to remain in Canada on a government pension?

I think those people have tired of being dragged into the meat grinder with an average of 4 days life span.

Who can blame them because they are fighting a proxy war for other countries?

This isn’t a war for their freedom because they were free before the war. Zelensky has removed their freedoms and put an end to elections. They have no choice if they want him gone and the war to end.

Unless their military is lead by blithering idiots like Douglas Haig in WWII England, or unless maybe they are in the demographic of Ukes that knows what Banderists and Svoboda and Right Sector are. Or unless you grew up speaking a language that they suddenly decided was illegal, or your mom got arrested for laying flowers at a WWII memorial, or your church just got seized by the state, or you even see the “invaders” as kicking the hell out of the nazis that seized your government and torment you now. Then it’s perfectly rational not to join in.

PS... and I’m going to guess you have never been in a trench under artillery fire.

Last week it was several missiles fired and one ship damaged. Now it’s one ship destroyed. By the end of the week it’ll be the entire base obliterated.

Every American should be happy when our enemies lose some military capability against us, but that isn’t the case on this thread.

Russia and China losing ships, submarines, and aircraft or experiencing any difficulties in their offensive capabilities should make all freepers happy.

Good guess. My “war”was the Cuban missile crisis. My ship evacuated military dependents and civvy contractors from GTMO. We were a big fat target in that bay.
