A Washington, DC, 13-year-old juvenile was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking of a federal officer in Northwest on Saturday, according to police.
The tragic incident is representative of the soaring crime in the District:
A total of 760 carjackings occurred in the first ten months of 2023, police data show.
Sixty-five percent of those arrested for carjacking are juveniles.
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves, who is responsible for prosecuting those D.C. police arrests, prosecuted only 56 percent of those police arrested in 2023.
Police said Vernard Toney Jr. tried to carjack an off-duty federal security officer around 10 p.m. Saturday but was killed during the incident. The episode took place on the 600 block of D Street NW, near 7th Street, in the Penn Quarter area, NBC4 Washington reported:

“tragic incident “
? What ... wait ... I thought it said the perp was shot and killed ?
Carjacking should be a capital offense, it is a modern equivalent of horse thieving.
No outrage? I’m guessing black officer.
Well some things are good, some things are bad
Seems easy to tell what this one is.
We need more good gun control like that. And where the hell did good parenting ever go?.... Oh yah, the public schools are turning the kids over to following Satan! ... imho
That is a BIG possiability. Recently a similar thing happened in DC where 3 “teens” were breaking into a guys car and threatened him, he defended himself and shot one of them. There was outrage for a hot minute until it was found out the guy was a black city worker with ties to the mayor. Poof! Media coverage gone quicker than you can say “Saint Floyd”.
Some bad decisions are so bad, you can only make them once.
Another LIFE OF CRIME snuffed out at such a young age.
What a tragedy for the law abiding.
I agree “tragic incident” must be a misprint
An officer who avoided getting ‘defunded’??
Soon, we will hear that Ben Crump is representing the family. Several fathers will appear insisting he was a good boy, although they seldom saw him, and his mother will say he “dinadonuffin” and didn’t deserve to die.
The evil firearm and federal officer will be vilified in the press and the WaPo will have several editorials asking “is it time that federal officers put down their firearms?”. Oh, and let’s not forget the phrase, “No property is worth a person’s life”. All while ignoring the fact that apparently no one ever told the kid that bit of wisdom.
We’ll never know what grade he got on his advanced algebra and trigonometry classes.
If anything, the guard prevented someone from a lifetime of crime.
Yeah, but if a civilian had shot the perp, (s)he would have been in a world of trouble. THAT is what HAS to change. No justice, no peace. Know justice, know peace.
These parents sure are steering their children in the right direction ,Oh wait ,what parents?
Then we'd see some action.
As for the punk kid involved in this case all I'll say is....gee,I can hardly hold back my tears.
“ tragic incident”?
Nope. One less creep to do it again. Thinning the herd. Sorry, Vernard, FAFO is the Code of the Jungle.
yes he was an aspiring rapper set to enter community college in the fall...these numb nuts are so predictable
His school will bring in extra counselors to help the student body and faculty deal with their grief.
