UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres accused Israel of violating international law in its retaliation against the Hamas terrorist organization in the Gaza Strip and called for an immediate truce that would leave the terrorist organization in power after it massacred over 1,400 Israelis in the worst mass killing of Jews since the Holocaust.
"I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international humanitarian law that we are witnessing in Gaza. Let me be clear: No party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law," Guterres said during a Security Council meeting on the Gaza conflict.
"I have condemned unequivocally the horrifying and unprecedented 7 October act of terror by Hamas in Israel," he continued. "Nothing can justify the deliberate killing, injuring, and kidnapping of civilians, or the launching of rockets against civilian targets. All hostages must be treated humanely and released immediately and without conditions."
However, he stated that "it is important to also recognize the attack by Hamas did not happen in a vacuum. The Palestinian people have been subjected to 56 years of suffocating occupation. They have seen their lands steadily devoured by settlements and plagued by violence, their economies stifled, their people displaced and their homes demolished. Their hopes for a political solution to their plight have been vanishing."

Who should win this year's GFYS Award, just invented by me?
Prize: Being told to GFYS.
Eject this Nazi from the UN.
Looks like Kurt Waldheim wasn't the only Nazi Secretary-General.
We should have walked out. Permanently.
This mindset will never stop. It's a learned thing.
When Israel is backed into a corner and unleashes the Samson option, maybe then the world will understand, at the end.
SH was referring to the Six Day War borders when he mentioned 56 years of occupation. The reason the Six Day War happened was because of the borders of that day. They were indefensible, and that is why the ARABS attacked - to kill every Jew in the land. There has never been a ‘Palestine’ country recognized in the world. Palestine is contracted from the Roman Province of Palestina. Before 1917 (which the placards refer to) and the Balfour Declaration, the area was part of Turkish Ottoman Empire. So maybe S.H. Guterez should read a history book. A Two State Solution has never been a viable solution because the day it would be signed, the Jews would be removed to other countries of earth, which is the plan of course. Maybe the Socialist Portugese puppet should go back there and see if he can screw it up.
Even then, has he not heard that Ghaza was forcibly made Judenrein during the reign of Kink George II, and the Palestinians of Ghaza were no longer occupied starting in 2005?
He wins my GFYS award, unless anyone has an objection.
And the “occupation” didn’t happen in a vacuum either. It was the murderous PLO and Arafat that led to the “occupation”.
You have to go back to before Christ’s time to figure out who started it first.
Well, Egypt, Syria and Jordan had something to do with it, too.
“You have to go back to before Christ’s time to figure out who started it first.”
It wasn’t the Palestinians, because they weren’t around back then.
Here’s the problem with this argument.
Things were quiet for a while, and the Israelis had actually been easing off on restrictions and requirements for border crossings etc. The Israeli’s had actually been NOT targeting Hamas as aggressively...
Do you randomly, without warning, slap the $hit out of your kid when he’s behaving, and then say “that’s for when you misbehaved years ago?!”
He’s right, there is (((ALWAYS))) a back story. Nothing happens in a vacuum and people attempt to over simplify things by ignoring such. Ignoring the back story is a way to assign blame to one side solely, and it’s not truthful.
But at a minimum, if you’re the Palestinian side, even if you’re polishing all your new rockets you’ve amassed and praying for the death of Israel, you should consider that the timing is less than ideal. Do don’t strike out at someone when things are going fairly well and your actually having your way?
And as for us helping Israel. That should not even be a question asked.
Unlike Ukraine who we owe nothing, with Israel we have MULTIPLE security agreements (formal promises made) and it is a nation we de facto helped create in 1948.
Unlike Ukraine which is not a real democracy, not really sovereign, and has a horrible human rights record; Israel is a democracy, is sovereign and does follow a rule of law. Following a rule of law, and a doctrine where you have rules of land warfare does not mean accidents don’t happen, or that folks don’t go rogue on you. What that does mean is that you don’t have a government literally support a bunch of whack jobs like Azov in Ukraine.
In Ukraine, the “back story” had us antagonizing things, a lot. We were violating Minsk, offered NATO to Ukraine, had our SF there, arming them... Our media using terms such as “unprovoked” for Ukraine is a bit of a stretch. I think everyone familiar with the situation knew that when we offered NATO to Ukraine October 2021 that we had just started a countdown timer for war. Having built up the Ukrainian armed forces, bringing in thousands of mercenaries, arming the crap out of them, we had simply hoped that we had made the price to high and Russia would acquiesce.
But Israel is not the same situation. They really were surprise attacked and it really was unprovoked, we really do owe them our help, and this nation really is a sovereign and democratic state with rules they try to follow.
***Be careful, there are those who are rhetorically attempting to combine Ukraine and Israel in order to keep up support for a war which is growing increasingly expensive and unpopular.***
Someone please inform this idiot that Israel ended the occupation of Garza 20 years ago.
Hundred percent right on the Israel side. As for your comments on Ukraine, I’m not interested in getting sidetracked. This is an Israel thread.
B-but Palestine isn’t free from the river to the sea (or in Ghaza;-).
Antonio is a big time Moron
THE HEAD IF THE UN DOESN’T KNOW THAT PALESTINE VOTERS GAVE HAMAS 80% OF THE VOTE 16 years ago????
