Victor Davis Hanson: The Sickness of Our Universities—and the Cure
American Greatness ^ | 23 Oct, 2023 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 10/23/2023 4:47:48 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Before graduating, students should demonstrate a minimum competence in math, science, and general knowledge.

The sheer madness that has gripped many elite universities since October 7 and the butchery, rape, torture, and mutilation of some 1,000 Israeli civilians by Hamas murderers have shocked the public at large.

Campus craziness is, of course, nothing new. But quite novel for campuses was the sudden jettisoning of prior campus pretenses. Universities have brazenly dropped their careful two-faced gymnastics to reveal at last–unapologetically, proudly, and defiantly–the moral decay that now characterizes American higher education.

Recent news stories have exposed this rot to the world, and will have grave repercussions for higher education in the next few years.

The Nazis once desecrated the tombstones of dead Jews. Our campuses have updated that hatred. Students now tear down pictures of Jewish captives kidnapped or murdered by Hamas. University presidents do not condemn the hate-filled rallies supporting the killing of Jews in Israel, even though, according to their own safety-first ideology and prior proclamations about systemic hatred, these rallies instill a “climate of fear” in some students.

An instructor at Stanford separated Jewish students from their belongings, ordered them to stand in the corner, boasted about denying the Holocaust, and singled them out for unhinged rantings. Screaming campus activists and professors openly support Hamas even after its brutal killing of hundreds of Israeli women, children, and infants. That for more than two weeks thousands of rockets—barrages initially designed to enhance the surprise mass murdering of October 7—daily continue to shower down upon Israeli cities is of zero concern to loud campus activists.

An even bolder Cornell history faculty member bragged that he was “exhilarated” on news that Jews were butchered on October 7. A UC Davis professor threatened to go after the children of “Zionist journalists.”

That's precisely what the teacher competency test, the PPST, I took (and passed) was designed to do.

Now we have a critical shortage of teachers.

Coincidence?

““If the SAT and ACT are increasingly dropped for admissions to universities, then an exit version of them should be required to ensure that all BA and BS degrees certify at least a minimum competence in math, science, and general knowledge.”

There has never been a more racist statement ever cast to print

“The fix is to make the Universities co-borrowers on all student loans paid to the university.”

Nailed it. However, the turds will then attempt to give all the uneducated and dorky college losers gubmit jobs with good pay and permanent tenure. No, wait, that’s what’s already happened.

Before graduating high school, students should demonstrate a minimum competence in math, science, and general knowledge.

There’s a whole lot of people in college that have no business being there, that includes students, instructors, and professors. Many college degree programs actually dumb down students. The largest culprit is Ed programs, where completely below average high school students enter and subhumans graduate. Let’s choose that as the starting place in a cycle. Those subhumans then indoctrinate the next generation of children that will graduate high school completely unprepared for any real higher education. The weakest subset of that generation goes to indoctrination finishing school, otherwise known as college, to become teachers and the cycle repeats. Somewhere in the mix of this, the absolute worse become professors of education.

You know the old adage, those that cannot do, teach. The corollary to that is those who cannot teach, teach those that cannot do.

The cycle has to be broken.

That’s on the students who allowed him to do it in the first place.

Correct. First and foremost, students are customers. They paid their professor to do that. Perhaps if students paid as they went to college they would have an appreciation for the money they spend. Tens of thousands of dollars in debt to government is very nebulous to college students that never really worked to fully support themselves.

In my experience, the shortage of teachers isn’t a lack of graduate Education Majors, but a lack of willingness to deal with the combination of school administrations and unions, discipline issues, and the internal politics of the schools.

“The tactics of the Marxist left, including mocking and derision of those that have their number, seem to be working... only too well.”

Only because we (as a group) won’t recognize the New Rules, roll up our sleeves, spit on our hands, hoist the black flag, and use their rules against them.

Very true. And our weakness re: that will prove to be our downfall.... which the radical left is counting on.

You will not vote for Trump as nominee? Crazy. I am for RDS, BTW. But we all must defeat every Democrat!

“The history (including that in Soviet archives) shows us that McCarthy was largely correct.”

I was around then. It was not his perspective that was wrong, it was his methods. You don’t intimidate American citizens to prove or confess they are or are not Communists.

Very true, but a surprising number of people failed the test to the point it was considered discriminatory and, I believe, watered down or cancelled in Minnesota.

Exactly. Student loan deadbeats have no problem walking out of class to take their goatsmellin’ asses somewhere to block traffic and “protest”. They should have been able to make short work of a retarded Stanford “perfeser”.
