Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) successfully led a coup against now-former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday. He managed to eke out a “win” by rallying the entire Democratic caucus and eight Republicans to oust him. It’s the first time that has happened in U.S. history.
And it’s a total clown show.
Not only does it distract from the already tense budget negotiations, but it makes a laughingstock of the GOP—and the U.S.—and gives Democrats even more leverage to push through their radical policies.
Gaetz got a win, but at what cost? Sure, he’ll raise a lot of campaign money from this—he’s already sending out emails and asking for money on Fox News— but is there a plan going forward? Of course not. The two congressmen whose names have been bandied about as potential House speakers—Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Steve Scalise (La.)—both spoke on behalf of McCarthy ahead of the vote and then voted to keep him as speaker. McCarthy announced tonight that he will not seek reelection as speaker. Gaetz stated emphatically that he doesn’t want the job. At publishing time, Scalise had sort of thrown his hat into the ring, and some are floating Trump as the next speaker, but none of that will be sorted out quickly.
House Democrats and Republicans have been at a stalemate over budget negotiations. The continuing resolution will expire on Nov. 17. There will be another showdown and possible shutdown as the country races toward the proverbial fiscal cliff. Instead of working on that problem, Republicans will be squabbling over the speakership. How does that help the country?
Gaetz, whether intentionally or ignorantly, overplayed his hand. He’s being celebrated in some circles as the brave defender of all that’s good, but not everyone is on board.

You comment makes no sense. Just like now, it was only a small number principled members that caused the 15 rounds of ballots to nominate the speaker. The big donors were involved then with most of the caucus like they were now.
And exactly how was an ousted McCarthy going to retaliate.?
You. miss the point. It's the fear of what McCarthy would do if the ouster doesn't work.
Gaetz did the Dems a great service. Whoever the next Speaker is he/she will be aware this can happen to him and he needs Dem support to repel Gaetz if Gaetz decides to do it again. The price for the Dems staying out... oh how about shutting down the committee investigations into Biden(s).
That's the lesson you take form this? The lesson is that the next speaker should simply not lie to his member, not hold back on subpoenas during investigations, not hide the J6 tapes from the American people, not always cave when a shutdown threat looms and not negotiate a Biden-McCarthy debt ceiling bill that required DEMOCRATS to pass it!
And that's just the small list.

I disagree with Newt ... everybody who supported McCarthy, now or back in January, needs to be replaced.

Did McCarthy collaborate with Pelosi to keep his position, was McCarthy encouraged to hold the vote because he believed she had his back, and then Democrats reneged and sided with Gaetz when it came time to vote?
If Pelosi had lived up to her words with McCarthy, then anything Gaetz did would not have mattered.
It's my belief that Gaetz was only sending a message to McCarthy to toe the line with his caucus, and did not expect Pelosi to side with ousting McCarthy. Gaetz was warning McCarthy that they are watching and will file the motion to vacate again and again if McCarthy doesn't live up to thee promises that got him the office. If Gaetz never filed a motion to vacate then he would be seen as a paper tiger and McCarthy would take future threats less seriously.
I also believe that McCarthy believed that he had Pelosi's support, which is why he said "bring it on" to Gaetz and that he would win, when he scheduled the vote.
And I also believe that someone as cunning and deceitful as Pelosi might have had good intentions with McCarthy when she said those words to him, but she couldn't pass up the opportunity to have her own "Operation Chaos" against Republicans when push came to shove. Democrats have a long history of reneging on deals with Republicans going back to Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell (or further back with Reagan and O'Neill on amnesty).
Anyone who relies on a "deal" with Democrats is flirting with disaster. I believe that McCarthy did and Gaetz did not, and McCarthy paid the price for cozying up to Democrats.

Think about it. If a Speaker died while in office, the Congress would still need to keep working while a new Speaker was elected

Gaetz needs to run the republican Caucus and be fully supported in the Florida Republican Primary next year.

Gaetz "rallied" the entire Democrat caucus? That's bullshiite. The Dems wouldn't even pee on Gaetz if he was on fire. The wicked witch of the west gave the orders to her flying monkeys.
The next Speaker will be more worried about 202 Dems than 8 Reps whose leader is looking for a cable gig. And I’m still waiting for your mentioned donor list and doesn’t Gaetz’ group have donors. Couldn’t they make their voice heard? Oh and most of the GOP in the House won their last election by at least 60%. Reelection for most is not a problem. It is for the blue state suburban Reps like those from Long Island but they weren’t voting to oust McCarthy.

Gotta hand it to Gaetz. The democrats LOVE “bipartisanship” and Gaetz delivered. Now the media is distracted by this and now this give a few extra months for the Biden cancer to spread further.

McCarthy trying to cut a deal with the Biden regime to continue to fund the failed proxy war in Ukraine was absolutely unacceptable. As was his refusal to do what was necessary to assure that the FBI and DOJ were no longer being used as political weapons against Trump and US citizens.
The continued increased Federal spending under McCarthy's watch is also absolutely unacceptable.
