The Wireless Emergency Alert system is scheduled to have its third nationwide test on Oct. 4, 2023. The Wireless Emergency Alert system is a public safety system that allows authorities to alert people via their mobile devices of dangerous weather, missing children and other situations requiring public attention
Similar tests in 2018 and 2021 caused a degree of public confusion and resistance. In addition, there was confusion around the first test of the U.K. system in April 2023, and an outcry surrounding accidental alert messages such as those sent in Hawaii in January 2018 and in Florida in April 2023.
The federal government lists five types of emergency alerts: National (formerly labeled Presidential), Imminent Threat, Public Safety, America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response (Amber), and Opt-in Test Messages. You can opt out of any except National Alerts, which are reserved for national emergencies. The Oct. 4 test is a National Alert.
We are a media studies researcher and a communications researcher who study emergency alert systems. We believe that concerns about previous tests raise two questions: Is public trust in emergency alerting eroding? And how might the upcoming test rebuild it?

When the origin of an alert is unclear, or the recipient perceives it to have a political bias counter to their own views, people may become confused or resistant to the message. Prior tests and use of the Wireless Emergency Alert system have indicated strong anti-authority attitudes, particularly following the much-derided 2018 test of what was then called the Presidential Alert message class. There are already conspiracy theories online about the upcoming test.

I saw an earlier post that gave the time of the test, I didn’t find it in any links from this post. I’m planning on mowing the lawn tomorrow so I’ll turn my cell phone off and leave it in the garage. I love the dread the authorities will have thinking I’ll miss their big fireworks. They’re so fake.

I spent virtually all of my waking life in the Northeast, where we rarely have tornados.
A few years ago, I was in the Midwest on business. A colleague warmed me, as it was the 1st of the month, that at noon every siren would go off as part of a monthly test of their tornado alert system.
I was still jolted.

As a kid we had the sirens and lots of sonic booms, we had fallout shelter signs and actual nuclear shelters behind them with food and water for Americans.
When you watch some 1950s horror movies like Giant Flying Insect Attacks Strategic Air Command, or Giant Ants Attack the United States Army in Los Angeles you get the military/ready-for-war/we-can-handle-anything feel of 1950s America.

My method actually works.
I don’t own a cell phone.
I’m supposed to be in the audience for a matinee performance at a fancy schmancy place tomorrow with friends. Hope they do it before the show starts. It would be pretty disruptive if the performance has started.
I read that it will happen at 2:20 eastern time.
Wow! Somebody besides myself who does not own a cell phone! People look at me like I am crazy when I say I don’t have one or want one. I just smile. haha
I don’t have a land line either.
My adult daughter, who lives with me, has a phone that she will use to call for help in case her 78 year old dad has a medical emergency..
If you don’t own a cellphone, a carrier pigeon will swoop down on you with the alert tied to its leg.
