WASHINGTON, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton needled Russian President Vladimir Putin about NATO enlargement on Tuesday, saying: "Too bad, Vladimir. You brought it on yourself."
Returning to the State Department for the unveiling of her official portrait, Clinton also used the occasion to display distaste for the policies of Republican former President Donald Trump, who defeated her in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
Clinton suggested that there may have been questions about the U.S. ability to muster support for Ukraine to resist Russia's 2022 invasion because of Trump's legacy of alienating allies.

To a very great extent she’s right. Had Russia renounced Soviet imperialism and stopped threatening its neighbors then 1) none of the former Soviet countries would have seen a need to join NATO and 2) NATO would have been disbanded.

But the fact remains, NATO left Putin with two unpalatable choices. Do nothing and watch NATO charge right up to its border. Or option number two, go ahead and attack the Nazis, back NATO off and do what you have to do to create that buffer. Either way NATO needed and was going to have an enemy in Russia. Sometimes that’s all you get, a bad choice and a really bad choice.
It was always a fiction that NATO and DC would never tolerate normal friendly relations with Russia unless Russia agreed to become an administrative district of Western bankers and corporations. Before the war they were sitting at 19% debt to GDP ratio. Compared to ours at 120%. If they were willing to do like other undeveloped countries and let bankers load them up with debt, and control their resources, we would be the best of friends.
Betcha Putin has tons of dirt on Hillary. Tweaking him like this may be all he needs to release it.
NATO expanded regardless of what Putin did so Clinton’s comments are nonsensical.

NATO was never going to disband. The USSR hasn’t existed for 30 years. They have been infinitely more peaceful and extending the hand of friendship than we do. NATO is a jobs program there are tens of thousands of EU bureaucrats that get good paying jobs there. The head of NATO gets about $300,000 a year. And without NATO defense contractors would badly suffer. This war is a direct result of NATO carefully cultivating an enemy to generate profits for the NATO business.
The very architects of the original Cold War said Bill Clinton’s initial expansion of NATO was a catastrophic mistake.
And one of the most shameful things this country has ever done is take the remaining members of Galician Nazism and carefully nurture them and add fuel until they got a full-blown Nazi movement resurgent in Europe. Now we’re at the point that SS men are getting standing ovations and western legislative bodies.
