AIDS memorial sculpture sparks debate in Palm Springs

A proposed AIDS memorial sculpture in Palm Springs is at the center of a heated debate with its design sparking concerns in the community. The controversial sculpture, meant to honor those who lost their lives to HIV and AIDS, is facing scrutiny for its abstract design and perceived inappropriate connotations.

The sculpture, standing at nine feet tall, features a round limestone structure with concentric carved circles, symbolizing the diverse impact of AIDS on the community. Its design is intended to evoke feelings of connection, reflection, and hope. However, not everyone is on board with this artistic vision.

"It's really strained. I mean, it's almost like a piece of art looking for a purpose, instead of the other way around. It could be about anything, and as a consequence, it's kind of about nothing," Clay Sales said.

In addition to concerns about the abstract nature of the sculpture, some residents have raised eyebrows over its perceived resemblance to certain body parts.

"The backside of the proposed memorial looks like a graphic depiction of the backside of a human being," Gene Brake said.

Frankly, I'm offended that anybody should even think of commemorating the people who propagated that hideous disease among us.

You're exactly right...AIDS is 100% preventable, and is spread by deliberate high risk behavior. We should not celebrate or commemorate those who have chosen the disease that killed them.

Just from reading the headline made me think of the movie V for Vendetta. Memorial sculpture for the children that died in their fake pandemic.

Well. They are putting up a monument to something, and it isn't a raisin bagel. It reminds me of that old joke:

A truck driver picks up two men hitchhiking, and when they get in the cab, it is apparent they are an effeminate couple, and not just friends.

The truck driver shrugs his shoulders, and drives on. One of the men farts, and it is a thin, weak, reedy sound, more like a puff. The other man of the pair looks at him, and simpers "Excuse yourself!" before letting out a weak, dribbling fart of his own, causing them both to smirk.

The truck driver says "What the hell is wrong with the two of you? Don't you even know how to fart?" At this, he lifts a cheek slightly from the seat and emits a loud, percussive, foghorn blast of intestinal gas that makes the cab of the truck shake!

The two passengers simper and giggle, and the truck driver says "What the hell is so funny?" and one of them answers, "Oh, you're a virgin!"

But, to give them the benefit of the doubt, perhaps the people bankrolling the monument just didn't see the obvious connection. Kind of like the church that put up this statue:

Honestly...if this had been a monument to ANYTHING else, everyone would have shrugged their shoulders and thought "Eh. Looks like a bagel. Or whatever. Another example of bad modern art on in a public space."

However, designating it as an AIDS Memorial, well...one has to wonder why they chose that instead of ten million other potential art forms. Why choose, for an AIDS Memorial, a thing that looks like a hole, and a bumpy one at that?

But, it could be just bad art, I always keep in mind rules 22 through 26 from “The Naked Communist,” by Cleon Skousen, a Communist who defected and wrote a book with these rules: :

22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

And, I agree, my first thought seeing it was that it looked like an AH....yuck, sick!
