Trump ripped by right after calling DeSantis’ six-week abortion ban ‘terrible’
The New York Post ^ | 09/18/2023 | Ryan King

Former President Donald Trump has drawn outrage from pro-life conservatives after he panned a six-week abortion ban championed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as “terrible.”

“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump, 77, told NBC’s “Meet the Press” when asked about the policy in an interview that aired Sunday.

The 45th president’s remarks triggered backlash among anti-abortion activists, including from groups like Live Action and Students for Life,***

“Pathetic and shameful. Trump is actively attacking the very pro-life laws made possible by Roe’s overturning,” Lila Rose of Live Action said on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Heartbeat Laws have saved thousands of babies. But Trump wants to compromise on babies’ lives so pro-abort Dems ‘like him.’ Trump should not be the GOP nominee.

***

The Susan B. Anthony List, which has pushed candidates to call for a national abortion ban — and criticized candidates like DeSantis who have declined to do so — initially had a tame response to Trump.

“We’re at a moment where we need a human rights advocate, someone who is dedicated to saving the lives of children and serving mothers in need. Every single candidate should be clear on how they plan to do that,” Marjorie Dannenfelser, SBA president, said in a statement.

“Anything later than a 15 week protection for babies in the womb (when science proves they can feel pain) as a national minimum standard makes no sense.”

We've already seen the disastrous results of Donald Trump compromising with Democrats: over $7 trillion in new debt, an unfinished border wall, and the jailbreak First Step Act letting violent criminals back on to the streets.

***

“Republicans across the country know that Ron DeSantis will never back down.”

Unfortunately Americans are far too morally corrupt to accept a ban on abortions. I wish it wasn’t true but unless we have a huge change in the culture the best we can do is stopping late term abortions.

I’m having a hard time deciding if this newbie troll is more racist or more pro-abortion?

Maybe the Viking KItties can help figure this out?

Even pro-abortion USA Today admits that rape and incest account for less than 1% of abortions. The "what about rape" mantra is the logical fallacy known as the straw man argument used to justify America aborting the other 99%.

“roe’s overturning” made it possible for the gop to support state’s rights on the abortion issue, which would be the right thing to do. Talk of a national ban, whatever the details, will be a political loser and cost far more as a result. When Lindsay Graham started yammering about a “national ban” last Fall he reignited the national issue, which had begun to die down, and cost us the widely predicted red wave. Same thing will happen next year if the gop continues to practice incompetent national electoral politics.

Ohio this year is about to pass a pro abortion constitutional amendment, and they will do it by menacing the voters with the false but inflammatory charge of
a “total ban” which will, you know, kill women and such, and hence the need to
“protect them.”

Who wants more more libs. Let it be a reasonable 12 weeks so the blue state voters can get behind reasonable Republicans and independents.

Nonsense. If not for President Trump, we'd still be stuck in the old status quo.

Look, if President Trump doesn't bend over backwards, do backflips at your command, and pull a rabbit out of his hat, you're simply not going to be satisfied.

The man is attempting to have a chance at winning the show next year, and there is no way he can do that if you have assholes like Lindsey Graham attempting to needlessly put the abortion issue front and center. This is the type of crap he's attempting to surmount without abandoning ultra-hard-right-conservative-bible-thumping-I-don't-give-a-shit-about-anything-else-just-stop-all-abortions-now-or-else to the winds.

It's not a difficult scenario to see. But, as usual, the hardcore would prefer to burn the world to a cinder rather than getting most of the pie instead of all of the pie.

I’ll admit I haven’t and will try to view it for myself. But I remain troubled by his criticisms of Pro-Lifers which I do not remember from him until he left office. Is he going through a post-presidency Bushie, here’s what I really think about abortion?

Ahh. Spoke like a true Retread Troll. Tell us...

Was being a racist or a pro-abort the reason why you were zotted previously?

Donald Trump did more for the pro-life movement, by far, than any President in the past 50 years. HE PUT JUDGES ON SCOTUS THAT OVERTURNED ROE.

What's outrageous is that you think those of us that pro-life don't realize that?

There wasn't another Republican that would put enough judges on SCOTUS to overturn Roe. The establishment Republicans say the right thing and stab the base in the back. TRUMP KEEPS HIS PROMISES.

You're ridiculous. And, you're either going to get on the Trump train or get on the tracks and get run over.

Yes, I know it’s an ongoing discussion on Free Republic, that DeSantis is controlled by / allied with, Karl Rove, Paul Ryan, the Bushes, and other assorted liberals.

It gets so confusing, as some Freepers say DeSantis has a fine conservative record as governor, and then other Freepers say he’s really liberal, because look at who is giving him money and all that.

I respectfully disagree. We can win the argument against early term abortion at the state level.

What's true is that Trump ended Roe and gave pro-lifers the best opportunity in 50 years to pass laws at the state level to reduce or eliminate abortion.

Yeah you missed the memo. And a lot more.

The issue is not when life becomes viable. The issue is that Florida signed the best anti-abortion legislation in the USA.

And this pisses off Trump.

You sir or transgender madam are a racist! Your comment was particularly vile and venomous and lives up to your chosen username. Many white women keep their half minority children even if conceived out of wedlock! You are disgusting and probably an operative trying to get people twisted up and divided from each other.

Today it’s trust the plan.
He’s standing in the way! Or some such nonsense.
Twas a good run.

blacks/latinos make up the majority of crime against whites? true or false?

more blacks/latinos would lead to even higher crime rates? true or false?

more more blacks/latinos would lead to the democratic party winning more elections? true or false?

But Trump said it!

The DeSantis crowd is crowing about this as if it will pump a few breaths into their dead candidate.

It won't. Not even a little bit.

The primary is over, Trump is the GOP nominee, and we're in general election mode now.

Trump hasn't flip-flopped on anything. He kept his promise to overturn Roe. That was the ONLY realistic thing that could be done at the Federal level.

We trust Trump because his promises. Establishment Republicans always make promises on the issue that they never keep, in particular to put judges on SCOTUS that would overturn Roe.

Both Bushes said the right things and stuck pro-lifers with judges like David Souter and John Roberts, one a liberal and one that would never have made a decision to overturn Roe.
