Former president Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP presidential primary, said a state abortion law signed by his top challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which bans the procedure after six weeks, is “terrible.”
In April, DeSantis signed the controversial law, which will go into effect if the Florida Supreme Court upholds the state’s 15-week ban on abortion that he signed into law last spring. At a hearing this month, the Florida justices appeared open to upholding the limiting ban.
Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” criticized DeSantis for being “willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban.”
“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said.
DeSantis’s six-week ban — which includes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and “fatal fetal abnormalities” — would outlaw the procedure in Florida before many people know they’re pregnant.
The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.
Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.
Trump declined to say what time frame he thinks is appropriate for an abortion ban and instead insisted that he would “sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something, and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”
“Both sides are going to like me,” he added. “I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable.” ***

“Do the unborn have a seat at that table?”
Do DeSantis’ five-week-olds and younger have a seat at your table?
If you’re going to arbitrarily insist on a number, you will get pushback from all sides.
Trump is pro-life and politically astute. Because of his Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe, we are now in the driver’s seat on abortion.
Let the states decide
You dip. Trump was criticizing a state statute.
Yesterday, he said men will give birth. But none of this is surprising. He was always pro-choice and pro-LGBT.
Morally, and over the longer term politically, it's correct to push the Overton window in this direction. If you start a negotiation at your bottom line last acceptable offer (which is generally 15ish weeks), and the other side starts at "no restrictions at all", the middle ground will quickly shift to something like "ok, can we settle at 22ish weeks and very little restrictions?" And because democrats are absolutists on this, they'll immediately try to poke holes in even these limits... and you've changed nobody's mind.
Not really.
i did not say that- just said that where theres a will theres a way.
Women have been terminating pregnancies for a long time. Long time. You don’t like it- not gonna stop them.
So ugh! right back at you.
because the federal government has never passed a law about it.
I had 4 babies with no pain medication in the span of 5 years and 8 months, just like women have done throughout the ages.
It never entered my mind to call it torture. It was life's greatest blessing
It’s time to play another round of “WHAT TRUMP AKSHUALLY SAID WAS..!!!”
So, you admit desanctomonious supports abortion?
People have contorted themselves into human pretzels to defend Trump
This issue is a quagmire.
There are people that think contraception is a sin. People that think a postcoital contraceptive is a sin.
I think our country being destroyed is a sin and that people who push their hobby horse and damage the man who is the best chance to turn America around are doing the devil’s work.
Because of Trump thousand of lives have already been saved.
There needs to be a consensus. We can do the best we can state by state but a minimum consensus on 12-16 weeks or some other number would save many lives.
People do many things other people think is wrong. Abortion in the first trimester is one of those things. Wrong to me, a tragedy to the baby but maybe that is where the line could be drawn to save many millions of babies and eliminate the barbarous late term abortions.
Trump is correct. No amount of law will stop abortions, where they are illegal women still connive. After all the gains we have made destroying the opportunity to have more prolife, constitution respecting justices and rescue our Nation out of an insistence on the impossible is hubris and not reasoned commitment to life.
Truth! Well said.
"Not really."
Your memory of the last 50 years is faulty.
A national amendment for no exceptions will bring back Roe, or worse.
Trump is playing this right. States' rights is the way to go
“People have contorted themselves into human pretzels to defend Trump”
Indeed. It’s very cult-like.
It’s starting to freak me out a bit, quite honestly.
Agreed
Someone should slyly state “Safe, Legal and Rare” and let the left chew on that. This issue isn’t the issue. It’s all about raising the money. I’m with you. The smart thing is to use the money wisely.
Improvise, Adapt Overcome.
That's not possible. Neither side is open to compromise.
For the pro-life side, a fetus is a human being however early in development.
For the pro-abortion side, the issue is female bodily autonomy. A woman's right to do as she pleases is an absolute principle and whatever impairs that "right," however slight, is a violent assault upon her body.
For both sides, there is a moral principle at stake. It's an emotional issue on both sides, good vs. evil, and no compromise is possible.
And how are you going to do that? That will happen when there are no guns, no exceptions
The world has had abortions since the beginning of history. Allegedly the Roman Catholic church even allowed it. Some midwife somewhere or some doctor somewhere will be doing it.
