Former president Donald Trump, the front-runner in the GOP presidential primary, said a state abortion law signed by his top challenger, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), which bans the procedure after six weeks, is “terrible.”
In April, DeSantis signed the controversial law, which will go into effect if the Florida Supreme Court upholds the state’s 15-week ban on abortion that he signed into law last spring. At a hearing this month, the Florida justices appeared open to upholding the limiting ban.
Trump, in an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” criticized DeSantis for being “willing to sign a five-week and six-week ban.”
“I think what he did is a terrible thing and a terrible mistake,” Trump said.
DeSantis’s six-week ban — which includes exceptions for rape, incest, medical emergencies and “fatal fetal abnormalities” — would outlaw the procedure in Florida before many people know they’re pregnant.
The new host of “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker, asked Trump if he’d sign federal legislation that would ban abortion at 15 weeks, a limit that antiabortion groups and some lawmakers have rallied behind.
Trump said no, and said he’d seek to negotiate with Democrats on the issue.
Trump declined to say what time frame he thinks is appropriate for an abortion ban and instead insisted that he would “sit down with both sides and I’d negotiate something, and we’ll end up with peace on that issue for the first time in 52 years.”
“Both sides are going to like me,” he added. “I’m going to come together with all groups, and we’re going to have something that’s acceptable.” ***

The overturning of Roe v. Wade did NOT outlaw abortion, it simply returned it to the states to decide. No president will have the power to outlaw it, ever.
Repeal the 19th Amendment!
The torture that the unborn child goes through is far than the suffering of the parents. It’s amazing that a so called civilized country allows these barbaric acts. The present situation with Brandon may well be punishment because of how callous people in this country are to innocent human life.
Agreed. Republicans use the wrong rhetoric on this issue. All the lecturing and pontificating may play to pro-life voters, but it costs other votes.
Want to change hearts and minds? Want to save babies? Talk about “pregnancy crisis centers” and “pregnancy crisis hotlines.” Tell voters these centers offer “counseling on health insurance, housing, addiction services, etc.”... and make sure these centers do offer those services. (All that means is someone would talk to the women, give them pamphlets, ask them if they have insurance and housing, etc.)
Encourage women (and girls) in “pregnancy crisis” to call and visit these centers for help. Most importantly, make sure these pregnancy centers give ultrasounds, along with accurate information about fetal development. Abortion clinics lie. Make sure these pregnancy centers don’t. Let every woman see the tiny arms and legs and hear the beating heart.
Nobody is justifying abortion. I’m saying helping discerning parents will go further. Read what I said
He’s right.
Religious folks are good people, but our state laws should not be dictated to us by any religion. It’s a legal argument, and there are many differing views. Last time I saw a poll, most votors favor a ban after around 20 weeks. I’m good with that.
But The Pill is murder? Yeah, no. That’s your religion talking. And I’m not a fan.
In FL, they went too far. It was 16, I favored 20 weeks, but ok. But 6 weeks?!? It’s true, there will be plenty of women who are banned from abortion before they even know they are pregnant. Think they’ll vote for a republican again, ever? Nope. And now, because of it, there will be a constitutional amendment on the ballot to keep abortion legal way beyond 6 weeks.
And it will easily pass, and cause record D turnout, and plenty of Rs will lose their seats. We may end up with a friken Democrat governor.
Becase a group of religious #&$@?!! decided God told them to.
Twenty weeks would be 5 months. That’s a baby.
The 6-week mark was picked because the embryo has a beating heart by that point. I saw one of my babies on ultrasound at 7 weeks. He had arms and legs and a beating heart.
With that said, I agree that Republican rhetoric on this issue is costing us votes. GOP candidates should frame the argument differently (see my post #224 above).
The GOP has used Pro Life folks since Roe but the GOP was at its core never Pro Life it was just a way for the self-serving politicians to get elected. I will no longer vote in the Federal elections as I don’t like being lied to...
“People have contorted themselves into human pretzels to defend Trump”
Indeed. It’s very cult-like.
Oh, brother. It sounds like you’re going to need a new set of pearls to clutch. Trump is entitled to his opinion and people are entitled to disagree with it. But so far, Trump has done more for the pro-life movement than any Republican since Roe v Wade first came into existence 50 years ago.
Some around here are hoping that’s forgotten and that the only issue people focus on are a few comments during this interview. It’s not even clear what Trump has in mind when he talks about a deal, and regardless, no deal will take place without Congress’s approval. In the meantime, there are a lot of urgent, very important issues we’re facing besides abortion, so throwing Trump under the bus over these comments makes no sense unless you’re an anti-Trump, Establishment cheerleader.
Bingo...
You hit the nail on the head.
Stupid fake CHRISTIAN EVANGIES have hijacked the REPUBLICAN PARTY.
For past 40 years, ABORTION is one and only one issue that has been winning elections for Demon-Craps.
You most certainly are justifying abortion. As it is costing us votes.
You are weighing the life of one unborn baby against one vote and you figure it’s not worth it.
Better to lose babies than lose votes.
“Read what I said”
I did read it. And so did everyone else. Did you get a chance to read the reply to your comment before the moderator deleted it? It was a simple two word reply ending in “...you.” It was vulgar, yes. But it well said the feelings of disgust against you and others who would gladly trade more votes at the cost of the unborn.
I think your pro-abort comment (#6) received more replies than any other comment on this thread. Us conservatives were amazed that you and others took such a anti-life position.
Especially the troll who posted #231. You two share the same thoughts. At least he was more vocal, more honest of his hatred for pro lifers.
I am less than optimistic that you will reach those who need to learn this.
I did not justify anyone getting an abortion. Likewise, I don’t justify adultery either, yet I don’t go around pouring money into banning adultery. Because there will always be idiots, adulterers, abortionists, etc. Rather I focus on teaching my family and teaching them to help others. There, and then the Democrats don’t get to use the issue for themselves to bring the entire rest of the house down with it.
Is not abortion comparable to slavery? You have a human life that is "owned" by the mother and she is legally free to do with it as she wants up to the entire nine months. Using viability as a cut-off point is meaningless as babies are being saved earlier and earlier as technology and medical expertise advances. And let's be honest here, even a full-term baby could not "survive" outside the womb without the help of others. It's as much a human being at six weeks as it is at 40 weeks.
Hearts and minds MUST be changed in order to finally see abortion is just as horrible as slavery, if not more so. That can only happen by first educating people about what abortion is and the physical, emotional and spiritual damage it does to women AND others such as the father, parents and society. After the Civil War, no person who was pro-slavery stood a chance of being elected. Those taking a moral stance today will be the heroes of tomorrow where abortion won't need to be made illegal because it will be UNTHINKABLE.
The reason our country is in such bad shape is because we HAVE allowed the Liberal Democrats to use issues to sway voters without much resistance from Conservatives. What has been lost is Almighty God's blessings because as a nation we have turned against Him and gone our own way rejecting His laws and ways in favor of "freedom". His blessings and protection will not return until we have turned back to Him. Compromising with evil isn't how we do that.
Minds will never be changed on abortion for this reason:
Having a child that you do not want.
Some say ‘try adoption’ ignoring the 9 months it takes to have a baby. Me personally, I support abortion up to 8 weeks. 6 weeks is not long enough to tell if you are pregnant. I had an abortion 40 yrs ago, I was 18. I never wanted children and I never had any. Not everyone is meant to be a parent. I knew that proper parenting meant a 100% commitment for 18 yrs. No career, no hobbies. If you can’t/won’t parent properly, don’t parent at all. Most people have children and are lousy parents. Being forced to have that child decades ago would have ruined my life and the child’s life. Foster homes are a joke. Adoption agencies are inept. Many take children in for the money from the government. My ex husband and his brother were left by their mother to fend for themselves at the age of 4 and 5. No father in the home either. They were put in foster care. After several crappy homes they were adopted by a couple with 3 kids already. Both my ex husband and his brother were sexually molested by their new father, a navy vet, until they were 12 yrs old. Both of them were treated as slaves, they had chores and zero privileges while the natural born siblings did whatever they wanted. I could give many more examples but won’t. Of all of the people I have met throughout my lifetime, only 25% were good parents. Parenting means teaching and guiding. Most ignore that, they let society and government do it for them.
If you really want to change hearts and minds, help those that keep the baby and have no clue what they are doing. Society is the the way it is because folks stopped parenting decades ago.
Everything is politically possible with the use of power and the will.
I’m truly surprised Trump said this.
I presume he thinks that he must give something to his opposition, otherwise he might not be elected. I guess it’s “real politics”.
I’m not happy about it, but maybe this is the price to pay to have the hope of getting Trump elected by a thin margin.
Whatever happens it will be a another “too close to call” election.
America is the most perfectly divided nation in the history of mankind.
