Dominican Republic closes border with Haiti, further stoking tensions

The Dominican Republic had already begun building a wall at its border with Haiti. Then it cracked down on immigration, deporting tens of thousands of Haitians back to their impoverished and gang-ravaged country.

Now it’s closing the border entirely.

President Luis Abinader announced the Dominican Republic will shut all of its land, air and sea frontiers with Haiti starting Friday morning, amid a festering dispute over Haiti’s plans to construct a canal off a river that separates the two countries.

The announcement Thursday afternoon significantly escalates tensions between the two nations, which share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola and a long history of strained ties. The closure of Haiti’s only land border threatens to worsen the crisis in a country on the brink of collapse.

Ida Sawyer, crisis and conflict director at Human Rights Watch, said shutting the border would be “yet another demonstration of how the world is failing and abandoning the Haitian people.”

“A border closure would essentially lock Haitians within their country amid extreme levels of violence, including large-scale killings, kidnappings and rapes,” she said in a statement, “and with much of the population struggling to feed their families or access clean water and health care.” *** “The government of the republic of Haiti will take all measures as of law to protect the interests of the Haitian people,” it said.

“As you know, the Haitian government has a control problem in its territory,” Abinader said. “And if things are uncontrollable there, they will be uncontrollable for the Haitian government, but they will not be uncontrollable for the government of the Dominican Republic.”

Haiti was already the poorest country in the hemisphere before Moïse’s assassination . Since then, much of the country has descended into lawlessness, with gangs controlling large swaths of its capital and blockinghumanitarian aid.

Had a very close Haitian family friend. His family came to us in 50s. He became prosperous wealthy and world traveled in his specialty. Everyone with abilities and brains left Haiti a long time ago.

“...yet another demonstration of how the world is failing and abandoning the Haitian people.”

The only people failing and abandoning the Haitian people is the Haitian people themselves. Build that fence high, D.R!

Dominican Republic verses Haiti is just like the Eloi verses the Morlock.

HG Wells new what he was talking about.

WE have sent troops to Haiti to restore “order” at least twice if my memory is correct. Democratic conditions never last. An uncomfortable truth is that there are too many people on the Haitian side of the island to make any sort of progress.

What the liar doesn’t say is that it is HAITIANS who are doing the killings, kidnappings and rapes. Haiti is beyond hope. They need to be prevented from exporting their pathologies.

We can thank JFK for that. The Dems put the Duvaliers in power in Haiti and kept them there for decades. The Duvaliers sold all the timber to Japan to make cheap goods to sell in the US. When the topsoil eroded, there was nothing for forests to grow in.

Most of Haiti's problems (other than hurricanes and earthquakes) were caused by the US, especially the Wilson, Kennedy/Johnson, and Clinton administrations.

The list is long: First, the US refused to formally recognize Haiti (even though Whigs and Republican pushed for it) because of the opposition of slaveowners and (after 1828) Democrats. Then Wilson invaded the country, deposed the president and started a dynasty of light-skinned (mixed race) presidents, essentially creating a caste system. (Haiti is about 10% mulatto, many of whom are very wealthy). We put the Haitian rice industry and other agriculture out of business with decades of food giveaways. We eradicated the Haitian pig (look it up) which devastated poor rural Haitian families. Clinton and Bush restored Aristide to power after the Haitians ousted him. Rich American gays made Port au Prince their playground in the 1980s and 1990s, where they could do whatever they wanted with a desperately poor Haitian. AIDS didn't come from Haiti. It was imported from the US. And of course the Clintons have raped the country, financially.

But, yeah, let's blame the Haitians for all their problems.

Haiti average IQ - 67

Wow. I suspected it was low, but not that low.

As seen in South Florida, they are the absolute WORSE drivers ever seen!

In short order you get to recognize these drivers and avoid them quickly.

What an uninformed statement. Haitian slavery was extremely extremer than what you imagine. Haiti was the crown jewel of the Western Hemisphere for the French. Not for the Haitians.

Is there such a thing as self-genocide?

Is Haiti better off now since they overthrew their French masters?

Before Papa Doc it actually had a middle class, mostly of mulattoes, but the Ton Ton Macoutes took care of that.

All with the tacit support of the US, because at least he kept the Commies out.

Ah, you must be thinking of American slavery. As bad as Haiti is now, is still better than under the French. Port au Prince is a worse hellhole than ever, but Cap Haitien and much of the south is still relatively peaceful and prosperous by Haitian standards.

While in the US at least slaves could marry and have their own communities and there were movements to end slavery, not in Haiti. Some American slaveowners (like Stonewall Jackson) were actually kind to their slaves and educated them, and others (like George Washington) freed their slaves. And there was an underground railroad here.

There was nothing like that in Haiti. Haiti was a "factory" to grow sugar cane and turn it into rum. This was the source of much of France's wealth. In the US, slavery was propagated by breeding new slaves. In Haiti slaves were not allowed to marry. When a Haitian got his arm caught in a sugar cane press, they would cut it off and let him bleed to death, instead of stopping production. It was easier to buy more slaves.

So yes, as bad as it is now, Haitians were not better off under slavery.

Haiti achieved independence in 1804 so yes they were the first black republic. Too bad they degenerated into chaos. Nobody’s fault but their own.

None of the slaves in Haiti were educated.

All the founders in the American Colonies were educated.
