Trump celebrates Romney retirement: 'He did not serve with distinction'

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday celebrated Utah GOP Sen. Mitt Romney's announcement that he would not seek a second term, suggesting he had opted against pursuing reelection in the face of a potentially tough primary race.

"Fantastic news for American, the great state of Utah, & for the Republican Party," Trump posted on Truth Social. "Mitt Romney, sometimes referred to as Pierre Delecto, will not be seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate, where he did not serve with distinction."

"Pierre Delecto" is an online pseudonym Romney used for an alternate Twitter account.

"A big primary fight against him was in the offing, but now that will not be necessary," he continued. "Congrats to all. Make America great Again!"

Prior to Romney's announcement, Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs had announced a primary challenge to the senator. Utah Speaker of the House Brad Wilson, meanwhile, launched an exploratory committee for a similar bid.

Trump and Romney often butted heads on both issues and decorum. The Utah lawmaker was the sole Republican to vote for Trump's ouster during the first impeachment trial.

Romney was in it to satisfy his inflated ego. He did nothing for the voters.

I wouldn't cheer too soon.

Romney is a small enough individual to try and gum up 2024 just to be a vindictive jerk.

Romney will continue to do all he can to protect his sons who were involved with Hunter Biden in Ukraine. He knows what will happen to them if Trump is reelected. There will no longer be Joe Biden and Merrick Garland to protect them, Hunter, the Kerry sons and Nancy’s son Paul Pelosi.

Graciously understated on Trump’s part.

My friends notice how his response is measured. No meanness just an opinion.

Did Pierre Delecto have any grifter offspring?

In some ways, that tone is the most effectively cutting of his various postures.

Romney is already talking about a 3rd party candidacy, if that happens, he could very well get enough votes to keep Trump from winning, all it takes is 2-3 states where he gets 2-4% of the vote and Trump will not win.

He voted to impeach Trump. I don’t know if Utah wanted him to vote that way. We saw what happened to Liz Cheney.

I always felt Romney never had a good campaign against Obama, and literally threw the election away to him. I never liked Romney’s complaints about Trump, and I did not like many positions he took as a Senator.

But also where Romney failed miserably, is he got next to zero notice for some of the good things in the Senate he did propose.

If he had set his feud with Trump aside and focused any press he did get on some of his better legislative proposals (some I think even Trump would have approved), I think his next election possibilities may have been positive.

I think Romney is so smarmy that there would be Democrats voting for him too.
