Romney is already talking about a 3rd party candidacy, if that happens, he could very well get enough votes to keep Trump from winning, all it takes is 2-3 states where he gets 2-4% of the vote and Trump will not win.
I think Romney is so smarmy that there would be Democrats voting for him too.
