Erratic climate conditions - including the driest August in more than a century - have sent food prices spiralling above 11% in India, which is a major player in global agri-trade.
Just as tomato prices begin cooling down, onions have gotten dearer by a quarter since June in the domestic market. And pulses which go into making the humble dal (lentil soup) are now around 20% more expensive than at the beginning of the year.
India's got a "curry problem", some economists say, as the cost of a regular vegetarian meal jumped by a third in the month of July alone.
With some key state elections this year and a big general election looming next summer, the Indian government has swung into action, unleashing a number of measures to tame food inflation.
Following a ban on wheat in May 2022, India announced an abrupt stop to non-basmati white rice exports last month. More recently, the finance ministry imposed a duty of 40% on onions to discourage exports and improve domestic supplies.

The weather experts back in 1901 promised the people of India that a drought like that would never happen again.
Texas just finished up their rice harvest. If you insist on having “Grown in India” on your bag of rice, then go for it. I’ll have some good ‘ol Texas rice and at a cheaper price. Remember, India is the I in BRICS.
Get the skinny at https://www.usarice.com/thinkrice/discover-us-rice/us-rice-facts . The US grows every variety of rice so there’s no need to import any. We are the 5th largest exporter.
India is the biggest exporter of rice to nearby Asian countries.
Basmati rice may still be imported in US from India, I just looked at the rice bag in my pantry, and it says “from the foothills of Himalayas”. Might be imported. I guess Publix sells only expensive kind.
The COSTCO huge bag? I love the way basmati cooks up.
Oh yes, I will not eat any other rice.
Who cares about BRICS? It is a fake organization. India is enemies of China - it certainly isn’t coordinating anything with its main strategic rival.
One time i ran across basmati Extra long grain ultra....
it was heaven & cooked properly
came out just like a cake , & each grain so beautiful
Add 2.5 times water by volume for best result and cook on low flame
🙋👍👍 + kebabs from the grill
I’m a little late to the Rice game, but I quickly determined that “Instant” Rice, while acceptable (sort of) doesn’t hold a candle to genuine rice in terms of flavor, and texture. Might be usable when camping or hiking, to save on fuel.
The Jasmine and white Rice is good, but it seems more suited to stir fry dishes. For my money, I like brown Rice. Takes even longer to cook, but it has a subtle flavor that I like, and doesn’t turn to mush in casseroles.
And the el-cheapo store brand U.S.A. grown brown Rice tastes fantastic. It has gone up a lot in price, still relatively inexpensive. I guess it should be stored in the freezer, as it can turn rancid over time.
I would argue that China is not only India’s strategic rival, but an existential rival:
1. China supports Pakistan militarily and economically
2. China has been trying to build military bases in the Indian ocean - threatening India
3. China took parts of Indian territory in 1962 and claims more
4. China takes every opportunity to deny India a seat at the global stage
Of course. India has a warmish relationship w Russia, but definitely no relationship at all w China. And that’s not going to change. BRICS is a completely fake thing. In its 20 years of “existence” it hasn’t done a single thing. Not one policy.
