WASHINGTON — The judge overseeing former President Donald Trump’s election interference case in federal court set a trial date for March 4, 2024, a schedule that could have a crucial impact on the 2024 race for the White House.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan's decision sets the trial in the middle of the Republican presidential primaries and the day before Super Tuesday.
During a hearing on Monday, Chutkan heard arguments from Trump's lawyers and federal prosecutors about when the case could be set for trial.
Special counsel Jack Smith proposed that the trial start in January, with jury selection beginning in December of this year, while Trump’s team said the trial should be pushed back until April 2026, after the presidential election.
"These proposals are obviously very far apart," Chutkan said Monday. "Neither of them is acceptable.”
Chutkan said that Trump will have to prioritize the trial and that she wouldn't change the trial schedule based upon another defendant's professional obligations, say, for a professional athlete.
The public has an interest in the fair and timely administration of justice, Chutkan said. Trump's lawyer said that going to trial next year would violate the former president's rights, noting the millions of pages of discovery that prosecutors have turned over.
“This is a request for a show trial, not a speedy trial,” Trump lawyer John Lauro said of the special counsel's proposed schedule. “Mr. Trump is not above the law, but he is not below the law."
Chutkan said that while the special counsel team's proposal was too soon, Trump's proposal of 2026 wasn't reasonable. “Discovery in 2023 is not sitting in a warehouse with boxes of paper looking at every single page,” Chutkan said.

The charge is brought against Trump in all 4 cases are frightening because they are made up and of a nature that have never been brought before an American history.
And these leftist judges sit there and pretend that it’s all business as usual.
Meanwhile we have a republican party that is going to sit around and literally let these leftists destroy our country by misusing the legal system.
Her take on discovery seems odd.
For Trump's voters, you can't pay for this kind of publicity. What I'm reminded of is Uncle Remus:
"Please don't frow me in dat dere briar patch!! . . ."
If MAGA supporters believed the arrest and arraignment of Trump would only increase his popularity (and they were right), then why would Trump and his people fear an early trial? Trump should want to vindicate and clear his name ASAP.
And if this show trial should return a conviction against Trump, wouldn’t that be as beneficial as the arrest (with glorious mugshot) at the Fulton County jail?
According to only Trumpers here - they WANT a conviction. They are daring the Deep State to sentence Trump.

The judicial committee needs to start impeachment hearings on this judge. Oh yeah, an subpoena her to appear on the court date assigned to Trump.
Well, for show. It wouldn’t look right to lay down and accept a date like this.
Guess who is going to win Super Tuesday by a huge margin. It won’t be any of the single digit midgets that were in that so-called debate last week.
No chance by then. Juror selection, discovery, etc....
While it’s a different jurisdiction (Fulton Country GA) Fanny Willis has been unable to select a jury since January, iirc.
These things take time, especially in a case like this.

AND....this is new today, so March 4 interferes with a date previously set in one of the other indictments. Fulton CO, iirc.
There will be no “fair” trial in Washington DC. It is a communist city full of federal parasites who hate Donald Trump.
Yet Trump accepted the date to appear by Fat Fani.
Chutkan’s ruling should be appealed and/or reversed ASAP.
