The immensity and destruction of the 2018 wildfires in Sonoma County, California left a visceral impression on Mark Freed. He was 54 and had recently moved to the area with his then-wife to escape the crowded city of San Francisco; he’d never lived through a wildfire season before. The walls of flame “make you feel like an ant,” he said. “You don’t feel human, you’re just a thing to burn.”
For the next few years, as Freed saw fire after fire, he felt a growing sense of helplessness and foreboding. He would wake up and immediately feel the heaviness set in, filling the quiet. In his panic, he researched places that seemed the most protected from climate change, where fire and extreme heat wouldn’t touch him again for at least some years. But despite continually preparing for the worst to the best of his abilities—moving somewhere he thought would be safer, stocking up supplies, reinforcing his house—he still couldn’t shake the feeling that disaster is inevitable.
“It’s like there’s no control over what’s going to happen to us,” he told me. In trying to name his emotions, Freed said what he was experiencing wasn’t quite anxiety—it was deeper and heavier than that. That looming feeling, he said, was dread.
Mark Freed began talking to a therapist about his dread in 2020. They validated his emotions and helped Freed confront the real consequences of wildfires he experienced, as well as how he imagines fires worsening in the future. He tried forest bathing. And while he’s paused therapy, Freed says his unease is now manageable.
I asked him if his dread still bothered him.
“It’s less uneasy,” he told me. “It’s not gone, gone. Maybe it will [go away]—maybe one day, when we have a better world.”

Letting highly flammable biomass build up to catastrophic proportions is not “climate change/dread.”
It is deliberate sabotage.
Ok if we all go Amish will that appease the Leftards and the Democrats? Are horse drawn buggies a form of animal cruelty?
Mass Formation Psychosis.
That or Marxists Fomenting Paranoia.
Sounds like the main character in the story has PTSD from being in a wildfire. It’s not climate dread so much as PTSD.
It’s dread of nature. Too many NPCs have been indoctrinated to think that all natural calamaties are related to climate change. These people luv to say “It’s Science”, but they wouldn’t know real science if it kicked them in the arse.
Further, it’s just common sense to have a combination of respect, love and caution about nature. Nature can be very beautiful, but it is not always your friend. At times, it is a deadly enemy.
It’s Climate Bullchit
I’m surprised California doesn’t pay folks for climate PTSD.
Meanwhile, the total area burned by wildfires is dropping every year. NASA satellites make it easy to identify burned out areas.
Of course, the recent spate of deliberately set fires is beginning to alter that statistic. Smokey the Bear is not happy.
The government is driving everyone crazy. That’s the problem.
Call it Climate BS
Our poor children were subjected to that movie scores of times in classes ranging from Science and Social Studies to Music and Gym at most all grade levels for several years.
We have a generation of children that have been taught to fear Nature, Mankind and the Future.
Sirius Lee (pun intended), it is a Mass Formation Psychosis implemented by Marxists Fomenting Paranoia.
Well put, FRiend.
Living in the Soviet of Washington for the past 45 years, I have seen a few wildfires. What’s not said enough the WORST landowner that causes the majority of the non-arson wildfires is the Federal Government. In the west, the Fed’s own eastern state size forests they mismanage and there’s where the problem lies.
Weyerhaeuser, Sierra Pacific, Green Diamond and Port Blakely tree growers to name a few big ones, NEVER have non-arson wildfires in their privately owned and managed farms. They only lose timber whenever a Federal or State, Department of Natural Resources plot catches fire and spreads into one of their parcels.
If the state and Fed’s didn’t own so damn much land, there wouldn’t be a natural forest left in the west due to mismanagement. Now, they only pay lip service trying to put them out.
Not dread, hysteria.
Hot? Sure, it’s August in Illinois, it gets hot, real hot, always has but this morning...oh this morning was a cool, crisp 55degrees, jacket weather and if you looked hard enough you can just detect a hint of fall in the air.
“Stop Calling It “Climate Anxiety.” It’s Climate Dread”
Stop Calling It “Climate Anxiety.” It’s Climate Bullshit
There, fixed it
Climate is Natural you fools ,LOL
Mark needs Jesus.
Sadly, PTSD is a “garbage can” of self reported symptoms lacking precision. Just reading about this experience might lead to symptoms considered to be qualifying of a diagnosis!
