I believe winds — max sustained or gusts or whatever — are measured with reference to the ground just as recorded and the forward motion of the storm is not added or subtracted given the side of the storm. At a buoy, for example, the wind is measured without any calculation. In the case of Hurricane Hunter aircraft, the drift in the aircraft is measured relative to the ground and the aircraft’s inherent velocity (speed and direction). There is no attempt to report just the circulation part of the wind velocity

So the reported “max sustained winds” obviously are going to be higher on the side of the storm that includes forward motion.

I stand to be corrected if wrong but would be real surprised

That is Franklin. Weather people seemed to think it would spin itself out and head out to open waters.

“Over here near Orlando we had one wicked squall late afternoon- lasted maybe 40 minutes- wind tore some large oak branches down, torrential rain, dropped 20 degrees then stopped. Been quiet since.”

A band hit here in Daytona area around 7. Only 10 mins, but probably 40-45 mph wind, dropped a lot of water, fast.

I looked on map; the eye was 250-ish miles away. Big storm on the dirty side comin.

Use that interactive map. It shows Franklin going away from the U.S.

Yeah, plus in Daytona you’ve got all the surf and rip tides kicking up from Franklin.

We got a robocall today from our RV insurance company to move our RV to a safe location as high winds are expected in our area (north GA). That was a first

Latest info, 110 mph sustained winds, barometer now down to 960. paraphrasing from Weather Nation on TV. Picking up strength.

They’re describing it “small but powerful”.

Franklin is a fish storm. It is not moving toward the US.

And I believe the planes use Doppler “radar” to sense wind velocities as well. Again, the max sustained velocity is reported as measured (after adjusting for aircraft innate velocity) without computing forward or circulation components.

Yeah, Idalia still has room to fall. Only ‘good’ thing perhaps is a day hit, even though looks like morning, and that it would plow thru some of the less inhabited spots in Florida.
