Ron DeSantis was winner of the first 2024 Republican debate — the man best suited to unseat Trump
New York Post ^ | August 23, 2023 | Isaac Schorr

Only two questions mattered going into Wednesday night’s GOP primary debate.

Number one: Would any one viable candidate stand out among the crowd?

Number two: If the answer to the first was “Yes,” would our champion distinguish themselves by acting as the absent Donald Trump’s proxy or by setting up a favorable contrast with the frontrunner?

Trump’s decision to sit out the first forum of the 2024 primary season has been cast as a cautious, cowardly decision.

It was undoubtedly the latter, but despite the illusion of political safety, the choice also came with considerable risks.

If another candidate was able to command the stage, it would be a strong sign that the race is not predestined to end with Trump atop the ticket as so many pundits have suggested.

By not showing up, Trump risked ceding centerstage to a younger, less fearful rival.

Of course, not everyone on stage represented a genuine threat.

...

DeSantis answered the first with a resounding yes.

And even if he didn’t go for the kill on Wednesday, DeSantis demonstrated a willingness – and ability – to take Trump on.

He’s playing for the top prize, not a place in Trump’s Cabinet, or more likely his court at Mar-a-Lago.

With his performance, DeSantis cemented himself as the man best suited to unseat Trump as the undisputed champion of Republican politics.

While so many of his colleagues onstage replied to questions with a decided lack of purpose, DeSantis spoke both fluently and passionately.

...

Judging from Wednesday night, DeSantis alone appears to have the stuff to beat Trump.

It may remain an uphill battle, but by beginning the climb, he may have the man at the top of the mountain second-guessing his decision to sit Wednesday out.

Trump ended his career again.

I enjoyed watching President Trump being interviewed by Tucker Carlson. Some people grow on you, and for me that has been the case with President Trump. By contrast, the more I watched Hillary the less I liked her. The same applies to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

There seems to be an understanding that no one should challenge Joe. This could change. The New York Times could signal that it should be someone else. Until something like that happens, it’s Joe Biden regardless of what Democrats might think.

Similarly, there seems to be an understanding that pretty much anyone can and should challenge President Trump. I’m disappointed that Ron DeSantis has chosen to do so.

Where do these understandings originate? The Politburo?

Pence went from being a stiff vice-principle type to now being a cranky sounding get-off-my-lawn dweeboid.

Christy came off like some ballooned east-coast restaurant manager with a wiseguy attitude who likes to poke his finger in people’s moobs and spittle on them.

Ramaswamy needs to link up with Harold because he has a better chance of finding white castle than the white house.

Can’t remember who the suit guy was. I think he might have been from Arkansas. He is definitely a different breed than the guy from Arkansas who actually did get into the White House once, but he wont. He’s a boring suit guy.

DeSantis tried to hard to over people and over the crowd, and he couldn’t. PEEP PEEP

I don’t want to say Haley won, but she won by default. She didn’t lose

Whoever else I missed, they were even more boring than the suit guy.

Why must we be divided on this? DeSantis is a great governor and Trump can’t do this alone and forever. We need a deep bench. Encourage, don’t destroy, the Left already takes care of that.

From your description I assumed you were talking about Chris Christie, but then you said Florida so are you referring to DeSantis?

I keep seeing that, and I disagree a little.

I thought Vivek came across like every VC person I’ve ever seen. He is aggressive and believes he is the smartest guy in the room. He probably is, most of the time. But the problem comes when you think you are...but you aren’t. Knowing the difference is critical when you are making important decisions.

Pence came across as steady, but I thought he was targeting the deep religious right side of the party. Thats OK in a primary, but it’s not going to fly very far in the general. Also, he came across as “older” and I don’t think that is going to play deep into the process as well.

I thought DeSantis was fine. Christine sang one song. Tim Scott was present. Nikki sounded OK. Asa should go home and give Burgam (sp?) a ride.

We need to clear the deck, and fast. These guys who don’t catch fire pretty soon, need to move out, and move on. The “fight” for the nomination should be down to two people by the end of February.

Notice how we aren’t interested in the best candidate for President, only the best candidate for getting rid of Trump?

Brother you are so full of it. Using the number “commenting” as an indicator of the number who watched is an inane assertion. I watched it start to finish and never commented as likely did the vast majority.

Someone who “opened” that particular “tweet” likely watched at least a portion if not all of the interview. A greater % probably watched just a portion of the TV debate rather than the entire boring spectacle.

The way this person is digging into the 177m number to try to give context shows that Trump won. When you’re explain you’re losing. It reminds of Romney explaining that something or other was a “non sequiter”. He went on to clarify, “And by that I means it’s a null set”. He went on, of course, to get shellacked by Mr. Hope and Change himself. “177m isn’t very impressive” is not a winning conversation to have.

DeSantis showed his lack of charisma. VR his over the top earnestness. Scott too mild mannered. These three “won” this ridiculous debate.

The others on the debate stage were repulsive and need to disappear.

The overall winner last night was Trump.

“With his performance, DeSantis cemented himself as the man best suited to unseat Trump as the undisputed champion of Republican politics.”

Meanwhile, Trump has been in politics for all of seven years and has accomplished more in four than most of the candidates accomplished in their entire political careers.

Can DeSantis unseat Trump? “Listless Vessels”, regardless of the context hit a nerve with Trump supporters. They will not forgive or forget which will result in DeSantis going absolutely nowhere.

Well, give a try at explaining that to Trump supporters that the 175 million tweet openings doesn’t mean start or full viewers of the conversation. Like you, I watched it end-to-end, but did not comment.

Vivek said Trump was the best President and Christie got booed. I didn’t watch either but Trump posted those clips on Truth Social. As a listless vessel I assume he can fairly extract for me the relevant information in the debate.
