Issue 1 was projected to fail on Tuesday, according to Decision Desk HQ, dealing a blow to Ohio Republicans who wanted to hamstring a November ballot question on abortion rights.
Decision Desk HQ, an election results reporting agency providing results and race calls for the USA TODAY Network Ohio, called the race around 8:09 p.m. With about 28% of the vote counted, no vote was leading 68% to 32%.
Tuesday’s election was the culmination of a months-long fight that began last year, when Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Rep. Brian Stewart, R-Ashville, first introduced a plan to tighten the rules for constitutional amendments. The debate played out in the halls of the Ohio Statehouse, on the campaign trail and even in the courtroom as opponents tried to stop GOP lawmakers in their tracks.
Proponents of the measure said they want to keep controversial policies out of the constitution and reserve it for the state's fundamental rights and values. Critics argued the ballot measure was a power grab that would hamstring the rights of citizens to place an issue on the ballot.
Ohioans appeared to buy the message opponents were selling.

Since trump, democrats have been highly motivated to vote. They do the work in registering and getting people to the polls. Republicans rely on personal responsibility. Well this is the result.
It was almost a 70 percent win. This was a monster win for the democrats. No need to cheat when republicans voted no a lot too.
Yes, and I helped them by voting HELL NO. Leftist Uniparty republicans rule this state. They fight conservatives more than the democrats. The Tea party was utterly destroyed in my county. Rino infiltrator trash co-opted it.
The head of the Ohio chamber of commerce is Steve Stivers who carried the ball on h1-b’s while he was in the congress. 175,000 illegal aliens in June and another 165k in July, no e-verify in this state though.
Dolan, another senate candidate voted for gun control. Red Flag has been implemented in our state without using the words “red flag” and all ready being implemented. A bitch in charge of future implementation in the very near future commented in the local paper that the perception was if you had more than 5 drinks in a week there was a problem. You need more... Property evaluations jumping 40 plus percent for single family and 110% for farmers.
They certainly want to stop we the citizens from any pushback.
Many Americans have become rotten to the core, just like the ones they elect to office, one in the same.
Look at the county results, rural and urban America are two different worlds.
Getting? democrats are the party of war, murdering babies, imprisoning political rivals and so much more.
They are the primary enemy, not some far off nation state.
Your tagline. It’s time for team Trump to hit gun shops and shows and Chirches to Ballot Harvest. He isb getting it in place.
It will be interesting to hear exit polls and surveys, as to why so many Republicans voted no.
This issue has been portrayed as a proxy vote on the abortion issue, but was it really? Is it possible many Republicans really didn’t want to make it more difficult to amend the constitution, which is what this vote was about, strictly speaking?
Honestly? Because the men that father those babies want nothing to do with them.
I’m sure many have given up voting as a waste of time after what we have seen and been told we didn’t see.
True. I thought it was dumb to begin with. It works against both sides. Say republicans want to ban gender mutilation for under 18 and want it in the state constitution. They’d make it difficult to get the signatures for the ballot and then need 60 percent approval. Republicans didn’t think this through at all.
President Trump is developing a massive ball9t harvesting operation.
Abortion played a big role. President Trump has the right position on Abortion, where the Electorate is.
And there it is...
100% correct. It was a stupid measure that was not well thought out. I would have voted “no” on it as well.
Apparently, some Republicans are too dumb to “read the room”.
The chose is between what is right and what is politically advantageous. Be careful what you wish for. The stakes couldn’t be any higher. There are grave consequences to the choices we make. I can live with my “Yes” vote on issue 1, and be perfectly satisfied with my decision.
People should pay attention to that LaRose article. He’s running for the senate. Trashed Trump at every opportunity and now it’s Kumbaya, spit.
We ought to just say abortion is a states’ rights issue and we respect the right of each state to decide for itself.
Abortion is not in the Constitutuon, and is up to the States. Gun rights are GOD given and are not subject to laws or referendum, “ Democracy doesn’t Trump the GOD given right to buy a gun.
