DeSantis disappoints, and some Republicans seek new Trump-slaying savior
Yahoo News ^ | 7/17/23 | Alexander Nazaryan

There was a dream scenario, and it went like this: both big-ticket donors and grassroots activists would unite behind Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, fresh off last year’s landslide reelection campaign.

Donald Trump, meanwhile, would find his own White House bid hobbled by his legal troubles in New York, Georgia or Washington. And so the Republican Party would not have to suffer through the kind of crowded and messy primary that allowed Trump to claim the nomination in 2016.

Then the dream ended, and the GOP woke up to the very reality that the party had hoped to avoid, with Trump as the undisputed presidential frontrunner.

As for DeSantis, he appears thus far to have fallen victim to sky-high expectations. Since his disastrous Twitter Space presidential announcement, the blustery young governor has seen his campaign stall badly. He is behind Trump in national polls and, more important, in polls focused on the crucial early-voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire.

In politics, as in flight, a stall that isn’t corrected tends to end in a free fall. Over the weekend, DeSantis fired a dozen staffers and announced a campaign reboot. Whether those are signs of competence or desperation remains to be seen.

But some Republicans are already looking for a new savior.

The shoe is on the other foot now, ya see.

Previously, the Establishment would get all their ducks in a row behind some worthless milquetoast candidate and WE would be flailing trying to stop the nomination of such a pantywaist candidate (Dole, McCain, Romney - Bush actually won but only barely).

That all changed in 2016. We've had our candidate since (same guy) and it is THEY who are flailing to stop his nomination. And they will fail. Their power is BROKEN.

“But some Republicans are already looking for a new savior.”

Good luck with that. You can’t fix stupid and the Republicans have an abundance of stupidity.

There is no Trump-slayer. Donald Trump is probably the most bulletproof and invulnerable public figure out there, and while vast throngs of people admire him for it, it drives those who have self-selected as “enemies” of Tramp to ever greater fits of rage and frustration.

Both “Trump mania” and “Trump Derangement Syndrome” are very real phenomena, and almost completely incomprehensible to the neutral observer. But even the neutral observer can see that life was much better under Trump than under Biden.

Despite Trump’s success in 2016, he’s lost the battle ever since. He’s turned off and turned away more voters than he’s gained since then and has not corrected course. I wish it weren’t true but outside of that one election seven years ago he has zero coattails in general elections. People tied to Trump did objectively worse in 2022 than those that weren’t. We can’t relive the past. Trump did a great service redirecting the Republican Party and identifying the rogue executive branch. He deserves credit for much. He does not have the capability to build a wider voting coalition now. The gains he had in the rust belt have shriveled away and that’s gotten worse since 2020 with Michigan and Pennsylvania going more democrat. I see no path for victory, baring economic collapse before next year.

Republicans need to find the Real Savior. Doing that would be a cure for what ails them.

I believe it was July 15th of 2015 that should go down in history as a transformational date in Republican Party politics.

Jeb Bush was polling slightly ahead of Donald Trump on that date.

It was the last time an establishment candidate ever led a poll of GOP presidential contenders. That was eight freaking years ago.

Since that date, every GOP presidential poll was led by Donald Trump or (for a brief period in late 2015) Ben Carson.

DeSantis should never have aligned himself with the Bush/Rove moneybags in the party. He’s toast, just like Jeb.

Good luck with that. You’d sooner convert Wahhabi Muslims to Orthodox Jews than have any kind of common sense breakthrough with his core supporters.

Buckle up for 4 more years of this demented imbecile president and his airhead token lieutenant. The GOP rarely misses an opportunity to blow completely winnable elections.

But I wore the magic GOP campaign vest and everything. It worked for Youngkin.

And Casey said it went so good with our matching white rubber boots.

Why not this headline and story? Biden disappoints, and some Democrats seek new Biden-slaying savior.
