House Republicans propose planting a trillion trees as they move away from climate change denial
AP News ^ | July 17, 2023 | Stephen Groves

WASHINGTON (AP) — As Speaker Kevin McCarthy visited a natural gas drilling site in northeast Ohio to promote House Republicans’ plan to sharply increase domestic production of energy from fossil fuels last month, the signs of rising global temperatures could not be ignored. Smoke from Canadian wildfires hung in the air.

When the speaker was asked about climate change and forest fires, he was ready with a response: Plant a trillion trees.

And stop spraying for “weeds”...the property we live on now sprouts all sorts of trees in the understory since we moved here...previous owners (my in-laws) would spray for “weeds” everywhere.

Eco-fascists don’t care about trees, animals, birds or the environment. They’re 60 IQ morons who will sit in the shade of the trees you plant and get stoned. And when you kick the useless bastards off your property, they’ll whine that people shouldn’t own nature.

The four year old ones are about 5 feet tall from 18” seedlings. If I outlive my wife, I might be buried amongst them. Who said I might not get any benefit from them? I figure 75 years and someone will have a valuable stand of timber. Are you aware the ash borer and the damage caused? In a matter of 15 years white ash went from commonplace to “functionally extinct”. It was an ecological catastrophe around here.

Where do you live? Black walnuts are considered weed trees in eastern Pa.

Northern Kentucky. Weed trees! That’s blasphemy. Next to northern red oak it’s my favorite tree.

Thus, an acre of solar panels producing zero-emissions electricity saves between 267,526 to 303,513 pounds, or 121 to 138 metric tons, of carbon dioxide per year. By comparison, according to the EPA, the average acre of forest in the United States sequesters 0.84 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. Thus, an acre of solar panels in Virginia reduces approximately 144 to 166 times more carbon dioxide per year than an acre of forest. Source: https://news.climate.columbia.edu/2022/10/26/solar-panels-reduce-co2-emissions-more-per-acre-than-trees-and-much-more-than-corn-ethanol/#:~:text=Thus%2C%20an%20acre%20of%20solar,of%20carbon%20dioxide%20per%20year Not the best source but numbers look about right if you only consider the solar panels in action. Add in the carbon dioxide generated creating, shipping, installing, and maintaining the solar panels, it comes out as basically a wash over 20 years. Also, the whole thing doesn’t really matter since CO2 caused “climate change” or whatever the term de jour is constitutes a complete money and power grabbing scheme/hoax.

With around 220 billion trees in the US that means planting about 3 trees for every existing tree. Republican or Democrat I wouldn't trust the government to attempt something like that though I wish I could sell them the seedlings. Never having heard of a tree suffering from gender dysphoria I'd just let the trees reproduce themselves. Does forest management need improvement, yes, but this isn't it.

‘So now they are desperately using heat indices to claim heat records?’

just like they used covid ‘cases’ in order to ratchet up the hysteria...I remember the breathless radio newsbabes at the top of the hour happily proclaiming the doom and gloom...

Black walnut is a dirty tree but the wood is highly valuable and the nuts are good.

‘Black walnuts are considered weed trees in eastern Pa.’

maybe, but those people aren’t thinking about the fine abodes these trees make for one of the most beautiful of birds in the northeast, the icterus galbula...

Well yes, but where is as important as at what cost and who should pay.

If a trillion trees were planted in places in the world where forests are sparse, it would have the same CO2 consuming affect without contributing as much to seasonal wild fires.

Planting a trillion trees in regions that already have good forests WILL likely increase the severity of the seasonal wild fires that already occur there, and by that defeating their CO2 consumption ability.

Full disclosure - I am not a climate alarmist. The science of what on earth consumes CO2 the most - green plants - is well known. It is also known that CO2 stimulates/assists expansion of growth of green plants. More CO2 does translate into increased growth of green plants where growth of green plants is already in progress. Why? CO2 is cosnumed by plants to breakdown the CO2 into carbon and oxygen. They build there structures with the carbon and release a really good bit of the oxygen. They need the CO2 and we need the oxygen. It is said plants are producing about 50% of our oxygen and phytoplankton the other 50% (ocean based life that also uses photosynthesis - like green plants, and also converts CO2 into carbon and oxygen).

I am not sure the oceans’ marine life would be as welcoming of 1 trillion additional acres of phytoplankton as the land based wildlife would with 1 trillion new trees. I made that difference in scale because as far as size goes the oceans have a lot more area than does the land surface the earth.

Do you burn firewood? Black walnut is ok and yes, red oak is very good and a favorite of mine too.

Baltimore oriole? Asking my expert wife on the subject. We have some around here but not as many as black walnut trees.

I burn firewood but use black locust that grows everywhere around here. It burns very hot and long. I figure to live at least ten more years and by that time the walnut trees, if left alone, should be on their way to being very valuable in two or three generations.

Funny, I just got a load of black locust last week and was told the same thing you said. Looking forward to that.

Black walnut grows amazingly fast and chokes out my oaks.

I don’t know about at the state level, but a lot of counties have some form of cheap tree program. I’ve gotten hazelnut bushes and black cherry trees that way. Hoping to plant even more after my house is built.

My county also has a seed-buying program, where the DNR pays for seeds from specific types of trees, which are then grown out to produce the trees they sell.

Since the amount made from selling trees for $1-$2 each is far greater than the amount paid buying seeds, it *might* be a self-supporting program. Those are rare in governments at any level.

If you’re using locust in a stove the first time go slow with it. If I load my 16”
fire box up with it in January, I’ll be opening the doors to cool my basement off.

Wow. They told me that too. Also, it’s not a good wood to use for start-up?

I don’t have problems using it for kindling as long as its properly seasoned.
