Do you burn firewood? Black walnut is ok and yes, red oak is very good and a favorite of mine too.
I burn firewood but use black locust that grows everywhere around here. It burns very hot and long. I figure to live at least ten more years and by that time the walnut trees, if left alone, should be on their way to being very valuable in two or three generations.
