'Italy no longer has four seasons': Intense heatwave grips the country

In Italy today, the number of cities on red alert for extreme heat has climbed from 10 to 15.

The warning points to conditions that threaten the whole population, rather than just the vulnerable.

Italy's minister for the environment, climate change and energy security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, told me that Italy's geographic position means it must accept and adapt to generally hotter temperatures and more frequent and severe extreme weather.

He said that in recent years there had been an "explosion" of awareness of climate change among the Italian population as the country is increasingly impacted.

"Even if Italy is not the world's main polluter, we still need to do whatever it takes to achieve climate neutrality goals together with the European Union," he said.

‘Italy no longer has four seasons’

Most countries I know of don’t have 4 seasons during the summer.

I was in Venice in July 1998.

It was like Tucson, but humid. Impossible to go outdoors. And it was 112 in Athens, same time.

NOBODY in NJ says “Joisey.” Only people in Bowery Boys films and that accent has died even on NY.

The headline makes no sense. Summer is the hot season--especially in a country nicknamed "Sunny Italy."

Isn’t the southern 2/3 basically Florida/Arizona/California weather?

NOBODY in NJ says “Joisey.”

It is said that English teachers in Brooklyn would post signs in their classrooms reading, "there's no joy in Jersey."

Chicago’s Spring is one week between Winter and Summer. Do we still qualify as having four seasons?

Historically the furthest north you could successfully grow olives was Pisa in Italy. Has that changed yet? I doubt it.

I lived in Italy. This is normal - they pretty much close the country down in August to take vacation.

I was in Italy in the summer of 1966. The weather was similar to that of Southern California, but more humid.

I don’t know…I was in Chicago for nearly a week toward the end of June, and it felt like Spring compared to where I live! The nights were so much more pleasant than here in the Southeast.

I lived in Naples (Pozzuoli) for three years when I was a “tween.” This was back in the days when they were talking about the coming ice age.

There were pretty much three seasons then. Winter, such as it was, was brief and almost non-existent.

Spring, summer and fall were delightful.
