... As millions of borrowers anxiously await a looming Supreme Court opinion that will decide whether President Biden’s student loan forgiveness is constitutional, a subset of that population finds themselves especially eager to hear the news: women. Women hold nearly two-thirds of the country’s student loan debt, owing $929 billion of the $1.54 trillion student debt, according to the American Association of University Women (AAUW).
“That’s a pretty substantial amount of money that women are taking on in many cases to just sort of achieve what men don’t even need to have a degree to achieve,” Gloria L. Blackwell, CEO of AAUW, tells TIME.
Although women make up more than half of the college educated labor force, per the Pew Research Center, women still face barriers to paying off their loans due to the gender wage gap, a lack of generational wealth and gender norms placed on women.
Black women are particularly affected by student loan debt, owing an average of $37,558 compared to the $29,862 white men owe and $31,346 white women owe.
“What we hear from women is oftentimes, ‘I went to grad school because I needed to make up for the gender pay gap.’ Or, ‘I went because I’m a woman of color, and I’m often paid less than my white and male counterparts,’” she tells TIME.
And the lack of familial support faces an additional barrier for borrowers who come from low-income backgrounds. Calazans says that the lack of generational wealth makes it difficult to pay for not only tuition, but also additional costs like books, supplies and transportation. “For a lot of people who don’t come from generational wealth, it is tough because it’s not just tuition, right? It’s a cost of living,” Calazans adds.

My daughter is about to start her junior years at a Big 10 school. I’m paying for her college. I paid for my college. If SCOTUS allows zhao biden’s student loan “forgiveness” to go through, i will take out a student loan for my daughter in my name and i won’t pay it back.
If they threaten me i will send them $10 a month.
Does anyone know when SCOTUS is supposed to rule on this?
$10,000/$20,000 per student
$10,000/$20,000 per voter
Joe’s plan isn’t even need-based. It is not Marxist. It is the concoction of a vote-buying politician.
Didn't you mean to say, "What udder bullshit"?
Exactly right.
B.S. degrees like "Black Studies" and "Womens Studies" and such nonsense are marketable exactly nowhere.
Math, Science, Technology, Engineering = all marketable.
Trades like plumbing, carpentry, electricity, environmentals, building, mechanics, auto repair and more = all marketable.
in fact, there's a shortage of ALL in the trades.
Want to make money quickly without incurring tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt? THE TRADES!
In fact, they often pay a good buck to learn!
Why are so many people so damn' stupid buying into the "college is for everyone?" bullshit?
I went to college and have multiple degrees. I paid for my education myself. I realize I'm not the rule and more the exception. I get that. Still, it's not for everyone. Just like me going into the trades wasn't for me. I'd have failed out in any of the trades in a heartbeat (and I should've.)
Pay your debts, deadbeat losers!
It is almost never necessary.
As a vote-buying scheme, it is not proper.
Even if Congress mandated Joe do it, it would be unconstitutional.
It's all for the common good, right?
I attended night courses at Community Colleges in Dallas County and Tarrant County for 89 hours credit @ $25 an hour.
(I was 25 and had already completed military service.)
Transferred to a State University and paid $121 for 18 or more credit hours per semester. All except final year was part time while working full time, married and raising two girls.
Last year was full time, 21 hours.
No student loans. $75/mo. VA benefits. Bought used text books.
Before Sr. year, commuted 120 miles/day between home, school and work, round trip.
I find it difficult to sympathize with the whiners boo-hooing about their student loans. They need brains to make choices.
“Why Women Will Suffer the Most if the Supreme Court Rules Against Biden’s Student Loan Forgiveness Plan”
They’ll be forced to find husbands, with the problem being that most of the decent men now look overseas for wives.
Another foreigner sob story. What a crock. Women need to pay their bills too. Prima donnas.
Unfortunately, at this point in time, there is NO constitution.. There is only "democracy". (spit)
What utter bullshit!
It might be true. Interesting wording here. Is Ms. Blackwell saying that women are taking on debt because they cannot achieve what men can without a degree? Or is she saying that women are unnecessarily taking on debt despite their being able to do just as well as men at their jobs?
Why should people who did not go to college pay for those that did?
“owing an average of $37,558”
About $5,000/year spread over about 10 years with interest or about $2.50/hour of work.
What about the minorities?
Maybe some people ( ahem) just aren’t smart enough to recognize that borrowing a lot of money means having to earn enough to pay it back.
Then reinstate every forgiven PPP loan.
Went to grad school and still too stupid to know there is no gender pay gap.
