I agree. I don’t view Tarriffs as Taxes, although many people do, and view it as a distinction without a difference.
I would disagree, as Tarriffs can be targeted. The downside is that it can spark a trade war, but good God, we are already in a one-sided trade war with Communist China in which we are playing the part of Battleship Row in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Tariffs are indeed taxes. A consumption tax that FAVORS US workers. Who better to pay taxes than the buyers of IMPORTED goods. Importation is wealth transfer out of the USA. It must be subjected to a duty.

I admit that I view tarriffs differently than taxes because you can avoid paying the “tax” to a degree by purchasing a product from another provider or country whereas a traditional tax doesn’t allow that, as it casts a wider net.
There is no down side to a tariff.

If they are done with the interests of the country in mind, that would be true. If done with the interests of some focused political or corporate interest foremost in mind, that would be different, IMO.
And I fully admit, the same would be true of any levied tax.
