Democratic presidential challenger Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called Sunday for the federal legalization of marijuana, arguing that states should be allowed to decide their own pot laws without federal interference.

Politicians have taken steps toward legalization in recent years, though even under President Barack Obama — an admitted former marijuana enthusiast — federal law considered pot illegal, creating tension with states.

This would be a great step in undoing the insane policy of allowing alcohol to be legal, with all the vehicular death and destruction it causes (not to mention health issues) verses a God-given plant that’s a proven anti-inflammatory health benefits and has saved many would-be alcoholics.

Good Job Kennedy!

Although I think legalization is a mistake, I agree that it is a mistake that should be made at the state level. Or else the feds should have stopped states from legalizing it some years ago. We are now half in and half out and that just makes no sense.

Telling the Federal Government they cannot restrict a plant with many health benefits is NOT a mistake. The mistake was making it illegal in the first place!!!

The present situation is that pot is legalized to varying degrees in various states some go the medicinal route others more liberal about it.

The younger generations already think old people were insane for making it illegal, so anyone still holding that belief is just going to be seen as way out of touch as time goes on.

So, if you believe legalization is a mistake, does that mean you support putting people in jail for possession of a plant? Doesn’t sound very limited government conservative to me.

Eh, better issues to think about

Perhaps, but it’s an issue that may lead to a helluva lot of people learning about the powers given the federal government in the U.S. Constitution and the 10th Amendment. That kind of thinking leads to a much smaller federal government. It can be applied to nearly everything the federal government does, which is fine with me.

On the contrary, the argument can be made that prohibition is a mistake, but one that is better to make at the state level where in theory at least, the decision to prohibit something would reflect local/regional values.

As far as I know, every attempt to legislate morality has failed, the best that can be hoped for is to inform people of the hazards and consequences and use regulations as a disincentive. This approach seems to have worked fairly well to decrease smoking as one example.

As a lawyer friend pointed out, if a first time DWI charge brought a mandatory 5 year suspension of your drivers license and a $10,000 fine, people would be much less inclined to drink and drive, thinking they could get away with it. Risk vs reward.

We have a national standard for drunk behind the wheel.

We need to have a national standard for stoned behind the wheel.

Until that’s the case, we’re putting the cart before the horse

Reminds me of a sermon. If the penalty for speeding was death, how fast would you drive.

If the penalty for sin was death, how much sin would you do?

It’s a 10th amendment issue. Since it took a constitutional amendment for the federal government to ban alcohol, where did they get the power to ban other drugs? Answer: they usurped the power.

All I can say is that this nation’s people have become more stupid and less judgemental (not necessarily a good thing) since pot has become more legally available
