Mutinous Russian mercenary fighters barrelled towards Moscow on Saturday after seizing a southern city overnight, with Russia's military firing on them from the air but seemingly incapable of slowing their lightning advance.
Facing the first serious challenge to his grip on power of his 23-year rule, President Vladimir Putin vowed to crush an armed mutiny he compared to Russia's Civil War a century ago.
The fighters of the Wagner private army run by former Putin ally Yevgeny Prigozhin were already most of the way to the capital, having captured the city of Rostov and set off on an 1,100 km (680 mile) race to Moscow.
Reuters saw troop carriers and a flatbed truck carrying a tank careening past the city of Voronezh more than half way to Moscow, where a helicopter fired on them. But there were no reports of the rebels meeting any substantial resistance on the highway.
Russian media showed pictures of small groups of police manning machine gun positions on Moscow's southern outskirts Authorities in the Lipetsk region south of the capital told residents to stay home.
...Prigozhin says his men are on a "march for justice" to remove corrupt and incompetent commanders he blames for botching the war in Ukraine.
In a televised address from the Kremlin, Putin said Russia's very existence was under threat.

Putin apparently took the ride to his palace at Sochi or else his bunker on the Mongolian border.
Were there 25,000 of them, and did they have tanks and heavy weapons?
All I know is it’s time for more popcorn.
A quick Ukrainian victory means no more us bucks needed.

Democrats will cry if (big if) peace breaks out.
Does it matter who “we” support here, unless by “we” you mean the CIA supporting Wagner to over throw Putin?
I would think it matters who the Russian army supports between Wagners location and Moscow.
“Were there 25,000 of them, and did they have tanks and heavy weapons?”
More than 25,000 that day. News to me that Wagner has tanks, or even heavy weapons. Have a link?
Some many here supporting Ukraine just ignore basic facts that were uncovered by the Russians:
1. Extensive money laundering by our politicians.
2. Uncovered bioweapon labs that are being used to create more nasty bugs to unleash on the world.
3. The Nazi’s aligned with Zelensky.
The hatred for Putin here is over the top. Yeah it isn’t a great guy but he has uncovered a lot of corruption in Ukraine while Biden and NATO continue to funnel money into a bad war.
He took Rostov on Don which was a main base for supplying the Ukraine War.
I understand that he has doubled in size to over 50,000 troops as a result of the Russian military joining him.
Moscow is digging trenches around the city. They have shut off internet there.
Time to buy popcorn. I watched live videos of his progress on YouTube this morning.
One of the Rumble videos says the Chechens have hauled down the Russian flag in Grozny and replaced it with their rebel flag.
That might hint at an alliance between Wagner and the Chechen mercenaries.
Fully equipped.
Battle of Moscow coming in hours.
“Russian forces in Ukraine may soon be surrendering in masse, given they will have major supply issues and potentially no rear support.”
Not according to what I’m hearing. They have closed off the city of Rostov, but, obviously, supply lines don’t go through heavily populated cities.
“But you should be happy. A quick Ukrainian victory means no more us bucks needed.”
There will be PLENTY of bucks needed, since the war that the Neocons caused will likely cost $1T to rebuild, particularly if Ukraine does win.
But yes, I would be happy if a Ukrainian victory winds up meaning the end of having nuclear weapons on hair-trigger alert. I don’t have a dog in this fight, just want it to end without escalating to World War 3 (unlike the Neocons).
Putin says we are witnessing treason, but there is no ongoing civil war.
There was no mention of danger to the Russian citizenry. There has been no confirmed kinetic hostilities between PMC Wagner and Russian MoD.
Prigozhin wants a meeting
2) Russian MoD put out multiple statements pertaining to Prigozhin.
Stating that Prigozhin’s claims of combat are untrue and “informational provocation”.
Urging Wagner leadership to stand down.
Meanwhile, Russian MoD continue operations in Ukraine.
3) What jumps out to me, is that Russian MoD and Russian State-sponsored media were very eager to tell us that Ukraine were using this provocation to push back in Artyomovsk/Bakhmut.
Almost urging Ukraine to make an attack.
To me, this looks like bait.
4) In conclusion, there is no civil war.
People are carrying on with their day-to-day lives as usual. Not a drop of blood has been spilled. Zero confirmed hostilities. Putin did not warn his citizens that they are in danger.
Either Prigozhin lost his mind, or he is conducting…
“Fully equipped.”

“The Russian federation is on the cusp”
Siberia soon to be known as Western Alaska?
Putin thinks Wagner stands a chance or are you not watching the vids from Moscow showing defenses being prepared...in Moscow?
Wake me up when the anti-Putin protests start.
You need to understand that if they are rooting for the Wagner guy, they aren’t Ukie supporters because this guy killed thousands of Ukes and now it doesn’t matter because he is now wonderful. They are actually globalists. LOL
Watch China. If this splinters like they’re saying, China will move on the Eastern section of Russia. You may see Nikes flying, but China will be the target.
After the disaster that was Yeltsin Putin reined in the oligarchs and achieved a certain stability that the Russian people supported. The lives of most Russians has gradually improved with his leadership and the reason why 80% of the populace supports him. Sure Putin is corrupt like the rest of them, but it’s all relative. Putin is vastly superior to Yeltsin who was a drunken idiot willing to sell Russia out.
