Titan sub debris field: Parts of missing sub's cover found, expert says
BBC ^ | 6.22.2023

Debris has been found in the search for the missing Titan submersible, reportedly including parts of its outside cover. Dive expert David Mearns told the BBC the president of the Explorers Club - which is connected to the diving and rescue community - says the debris includes "a landing frame and a rear cover from the submersible". The US Coast Guard earlier confirmed a "debris field" had been found within the search area. It was located by a remote-controlled underwater search vehicle (ROV) near the wreck of the Titanic. A US Coast Guard news conference is scheduled for 1500 EST (1900 GMT) on Thursday afternoon. The Titan vessel went missing in a remote area of the North Atlantic on Sunday with a four-day oxygen supply for its crew of five.

Some experts have speculated that it could have suffered a catastrophic implosion as a result of a hull failure. The minivan-sized submersible was owned and operated by the private company OceanGate Expeditions. The firm's co-founder, Guillermo Söhnlein, told the BBC that he believes there may have been an "instantaneous implosion" of the craft. "If that's what happened, that's what would have happened four days ago," he said.

That sounds like a horrible way to go.

That was the best-case scenario for them and their loved ones short of their being recovered alive. They died in a fraction of a second, far faster than their brains could have processed what was going on.

There’s a difference between a memorial and a tourist attraction, and this particular operation was absolutely a tourist attraction.

When a company cleans up a car wreck, bus wreck or train wreck do they sell the possessions of the dead at auction? Does your average car wreck have a sapphire and diamond ring?

In 30 years, the only thing left of the Titanic will be a rust stain on the ocean floor.

The anchor will be the only thing left and might last several hundred more years.

According to Capt. Frederick (USCG), active Search and Rescue is underway. No mention (yet) of structural failure evidence.

That makes perfect sense, the support ship gets a weird data stream for an instant as sensors go blip for the final time.

I just watched the presser. He said the thing imploded.

...they may have had a tiny leak, that suddenly become a catastrophic event.
I'd guess there's about zero distance between tiny leak and implosion.

didnt they have real time structural health monitoring systems?

Couldnt they tell from the sensor output that something was happening or did happen?

How a group of supposedly smart people sign up for this in spite of all the questionable things I am hearing is beyond me. I guess none of them ever had to buy a reliable used car. Lessons learned from that alone would have been very valuable.

I am watching the video:

Capt. Frederick just said, that he does not know the status of the vessel, and whether the vessel is on the bottom or not - is speculation.

In order: Apparently not, at least not from looking at their literature.

Not necessarily as carbon fiber failures are extremely sudden and there’s nothing you can do about it.

The company hired newbies fresh out of college with no experience in the field to design the submersible. Diversity newbies, no less.

So they found the debris field in the titanic debris field.

At the press conference it was said that the Titan debris was found some 1,600 feet from the Titanic in an area that was free of any Titanic debris.

At least parts of the vessel have been found at the bottom per the Coast Guard.

On a carbon fiber structure attempting to keep out water at 6000psi? Yeah, there’s basically no difference because that tiny leak is automatically a water cutter and the hole will zipper open in milliseconds.

From the info available there was no windows in that sub. You viewed it from a computer monitor. WTF would you risk your life to see it on a monitor?

Yeah, I don’t recall them even trying to return possessions to the families of the victims - weren’t there several lawsuits about that?
