The Titanic tourist submersible that vanished on a trip to the 111-year-old shipwreck at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean is believed to have run out of oxygen — but authorities pushed ahead with the search operation Thursday morning.
OceanGate Expeditions, which operates the Titan sub and whose CEO, Stockton Rush, is aboard the missing vessel, told the Coast Guard on Sunday evening that the vehicle was equipped with only 96 hours of oxygen, with the timer running out around 7:08 a.m. Thursday.
The status of the five passengers aboard the ill-fated trip remains unclear as US and Canadian officials work around the clock to attempt to locate the missing Titan sub 900 miles east of Cape Cod.
The Coast Guard on Thursday morning confirmed that a remote-operated vehicle “has reached the sea floor” and started searching for the missing sub.

I wasn't suggesting that they are. However, rich and reckless, rich and selfish, rich and self-absorbed, rich and foolish...
There are lots of things the rich can be, and many of them are not admirable, nor do they engender much compassion or sympathy from people who aren't wealthy. This is nothing new.
Could have viewed the whole ship on Youtube.
Best idea...
Not possible.
Reports say the descent to the wreck was 2.5 hours and the sub went ‘silent’ 1 hour 45 minutes into its descent.
I maintain that it imploded at loss of contact, evidenced by the USN’s refusal to participate in the ‘rescue’ (because they knew the sub imploded).
I also maintain that the ‘banging’ was a smokescreen to protect UW intel capabilities.
“But IMHO, we can issue 5 Darwin Awards.”
I had not thought about that, but yea, they should have a special catagory just for them.
They keep bleating about them doing exploration and scientific discovery, and I have been wondering about exactly what, and it just came to me, seriously. This incident is a glimpse into what it is going to be like when a trip to Mars goes wrong. So far, space disasters happened and were over. No prolonged countdown to the end. In this situation, they have everything but a countdown clock. I hope someone is studying the public response to this because sooner or later it will happen in space, and there should be an understanding of how the public will respond.
There appear to be hull mounted versions & releasable versions. They are designed for submarines but I do not find a discussion of depth limitation.
This article is over my head but does give info on methods in use & methods under investigation.

A releasable version, which could be in a pressure resistant compartment attached to the hull:
“Naval submarines depend on reliable methods of communicating status to Fleet Command. In the event of a disaster, it is imperative to have a backup method to transmit a distress signal. SEPIRBs (Submarine Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons) provide this function. Once released these beacons float to the ocean surface and transmit status and position to the COSPAS/SARSAT satellite system, which then passes the information to search and rescue teams.”
“It’s very sad and even sadder to see the “feelings” crowd becoming more prolific here on FR.”
It may not be a case of them being more prolific. Perhaps just more “vocal” in expressing their feelings... which has always been the case.
As a fiscal Conservative and a military brat, I consider the bottom line re: the cost factor expended in trying to rescue people that recklessly and willingly put their lives at risk..... whether for a thrill or for bragging rights...
when there are, as we speak, American veterans suffering and needing resources and help that’s never coming due to that “cost factor”. Veterans that put their lives on the line serving and protecting this nation, only to later be neglected, ignored and forgotten. The federal government has set its’ priorities and the vets are dead last on that list. It’s not fair, but life has never been fair. Not even close.
“The Bodega guy isn’t a billionaire. Priorities.”
Oh silly me! Thanks! ;-)
This was Titan’s 5th expedition to Titanic since 2021. Not many, but enough to wonder about stress fatigue in the materials.
And they forgot to bring a spare battery ....
Envy is the sole unifying force in the collectivist movement. This incident gives them something to rally around, and show off the quality of their resentment.
“not how anyone should go out.”

If they took several days to die, think on this:
Most of them (maybe all of them) had never trusted the Creator of the Universe for salvation. If they had died suddenly, they would never have had time to ponder... they would never have remembered hearing the good news of ‘faith in Jesus Christ’ to forgive sins, and grant them eternal life in God’s paradise...
You might die tonight: are YOU ready?
“That sub most likely imploded.”
I think so, too. I did a back-of-the-napkin calculation. A column of fresh water 1 inch square and 12,500 feet long weighs about 5200 lbs. I didn’t bother factoring in the extra density of seawater.
I wonder if the banging sound is still coming every 30 minutes.
the good thing is you don’t have to go to social media and read disgusting comments!!! Just don’t click.
I remember the "Airplane!" movie in 1979 where the TV commentator explains "They bought their tickets, they knew what they were getting into..."
Same applies here.
What I found odd about this particular expedition is that there are no windows in the sub. Just a tiny porthole at one end that is at best, 12 inches in diameter, which won't allow you to see much. Besides, with the cramped space they were in, they'd have to climb over each other to get a turn by the porthole.
Apparently they were going to view the Titanic wreckage mainly through TV monitors through cameras mounted on the exterior of the sub. They paid a quarter million dollars for that?
nope, not at all.
“Now the families must grieve losing loved ones… many of whom possibly begged them not to do this.”
And the families are probably preparing a lawsuit that will bankrupt OceanGate, which would no doubt prevent any future dives from occurring by that company.
Thanks.
The detailed specs are Greek to me as well but I suspect this device would have fit the bill here. Unfortunate but if they were indeed not willing to spend on expensive full scale pressure testing at max depth before beginning usage I doubt they considered the expense of this safety device worthwhile either. Regrets must have been terrible if they lived long enough to contemplate their folly.
Of course, on top of that, we have his comment of not wanting to hire “50-year-old white guys” in favor of young people with no experience, but have “inspiration” that he can see. If my husband stated publicly that he would not hire “50-year-old old black men” that would’ve not gone over well. It’s another case of society-approved racism AND prove that the CEO actively doesn’t follow his own EEO policy.
Right?! It's horrible how many jokes about it I've seen on Facebook. Even from some of my own friends. Disgusting.
